List Of Tipperary Senior Hurling Team Captains
This article lists players who have recently captained the Tipperary county hurling team in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship and the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. The captain is normally chosen from the club that has won the Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship. This did not happen in 1989. In that year Loughmore Castleiney were the reigning county hurling champions but did not hold the captaincy during the championship as none of their players were deemed good enough to make the team. In 1989 therefore Pat McGrath of Loughmore Castleiney was the captain during the National Hurling League and Bobby Ryan of Borris-Ileigh was the captain during the Championship. Captain (Gaelic Games)
A captain of a Gaelic games team, sometimes known as a ''skipper'', is a player who, during the course of a match as well as before and after it, has several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of his teammates. Tradition means that some teams rotate the captaincy annually, though others may adopt a permanent captain. As well as being an onfield leader, a captain takes the coin toss and raises the trophy when this is the game's prize. Responsibilities The captain leads the team out onto the pitch. Before the start of a match, a coin toss between captains of the opposing teams is used to determine which end of the ground each team will kick to. Drom-Inch GAA
Drom & Inch GAA is a Tipperary GAA club which is located in County Tipperary, Ireland. Both hurling and Gaelic football are played in the "Mid-Tipperary" divisional competitions. The club is centred on the villages Drom, County Tipperary, Drom, Inch and Barnane which lie near the Devil's Bit mountain range. Ballinahinch GAA
Ballinahinch GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the parish of Killoscully and Ballinahinch in the north-west of County Tipperary, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. The club plays both Gaelic football and hurling in the North division of Tipperary GAA. Shane McGrath (hurler)
Shane McGrath (born 12 September 1984) is an Irish hurler who played as a midfielder for the Tipperary senior team. McGrath made his first appearance for the team during the 2006 National League. During his career he has won one All-Ireland winners' medals, five Munster winners' medals, one National Hurling League winners' medal, two Fitzgibbon Cup medals, two Railway Cup medals, one Munster Under-21 Hurling Championship medal and two All-Star awards. He has ended up as an All-Ireland runner-up on two occasions. Mcgrath is known for his aerial ability, horizontal hurling and his piercing runs through the heart of any defence, in 2014 Mcgrath scored eight points from play from midfield in the All-Ireland semi-final and final. The 2013 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 126th staging of the All-Ireland championship since its establishment in 1887. The draw for the 2013 fixtures took place on 4 October 2012. The championship began on 5 May 2013 and ended on 28 September 2013 with Clare winning their fourth All Ireland title after a 5–16 to 3–16 win against Cork in the replayed final. Kilkenny were the defending champions. However, they were knocked out of the Leinster Championship by eventual Leinster champions Dublin at the semi-final stage and Cork saw them off in the All-Ireland quarter-final. The 2015 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 129th staging of the All-Ireland championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. Brendan Maher
Brendan Maher (born 5 January 1989) is an Irish hurler who plays for club side Borris–Ileigh and previously at inter-county level with the Tipperary senior hurling team. Regarded as one of the great talents of his generation, Maher enjoyed a 13-season career with the Tipperary senior hurling team, won three All-Stars and was a Hurler of the Year nominee in 2010. Pádraic Maher
Pádraic Maher (born 9 February 1989) is an Irish former Hurling, hurler who previously played for Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship, Tipperary Senior Championship club Thurles Sarsfields GAA, Thurles Sarsfields and at inter-county level with the Tipperary senior hurling team. He usually lined out as a centre-back. Playing career Thurles CBS Maher first came to prominence as a hurler with Thurles CBS. He played in every grade before eventually joining the senior hurling team as a 15-year-old. The 2018 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 131st staging of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887.
