Taiwan has been controlled by various governments and has been associated with various flags throughout its history. Since 1945, the Republic of China controls the island; thus the flag most commonly associated with it is the Flag of the Republic of China. The first national flag of Taiwan was first used in 1663 during the Kingdom of Tungning, which had a plain white flag with the character 「鄭」 (''zhèng'') on the red bordered circle. New Taipei City is a special municipality located in northern Taiwan. The city is home to an estimated population of 3,974,683 as of 2022, making it the most populous city of Taiwan, and also the second largest special municipality by area, behind Kaohsiung.
