Radio in Sydney became a popular tool for politics, news, religion, and sport and has managed to survive despite the introduction of television and the internet. The first long range (520 km) coastal radio station was established in 1911. In 1921, amateur radio broadcasters commenced transition. The first radio licence in Australia was granted to Charles Maclurcan for station 2CM. Commencing in 1923, 2SB is the second official station to be licensed. Sydney's first official station 2FC commenced service in 1924. In 1935, the studios of the ABC install a disc recorder, enabling the recording of programs to occur for the first time. Talk radio was introduced on 2SM in 1967. In 1974, 2MBS commences broadcasting as the first full-time FM station in Australia, playing classical music 24 hours a day. Sky Sports Radio (formerly 2KY) is a commercial radio station based in Sydney, broadcasting throughout New South Wales and Canberra on a network of over 140 narrowcast transmitters as well as the main 1017 AM frequency in Sydney. It broadcasts live commentary of thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing. Over 1,500 races are covered each week, including the pre and post race form and TAB betting information. The Hellenic Radio (Australia) is a Greek language radio station based in Marrickville, which broadcasts its programs in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia. It began operating officially as a Greek radio program in 1983 through the 2NBC STEREO FM community radio station. Today the Hellenic Radio is broadcast in Sydney on the 1683 kHz AM frequency and in Melbourne on 1422 kHz. Shows such as Skai 100.3 and RIK Triton are rebroadcast, as well as local programs. 2ME Radio Arabic is a narrowcast Arabic language radio station based in Parramatta, broadcasting on 1638AM to Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart and Darwin; 1647AM to Brisbane and Adelaide; and 1656AM to Perth and Canberra. Vision Christian Radio is an Australian narrowcast radio station owned and operated by Vision Christian Media, an affiliate of United Christian Broadcasters. It broadcasts a Christian radio format of music and talk from studios in the Brisbane suburb of Underwood, to a network of more than 720 AM and FM radio frequencies.
