List Of Superfund Sites In Oregon
This is a list of federal Superfund sites on the National Priorities List (NPL) in Oregon designated under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) environmental law. There are other federal Superfund sites in Oregon not on the NPL, which are shorter-term, cleanup sites. The CERCLA federal law of 1980 authorized the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to clean up contaminated properties and create the NPL list. On this list are the most polluted sites requiring a long-term response to clean up hazardous material contaminations.P.L. 96-510, ), December 11, 1980. The NPL guides EPA in "determining which sites warrant further investigation" for significant environmental remediation. Superfund is a United States federal environmental remediation program established by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA). The program is administered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The program is designed to investigate and clean up sites contaminated with hazardous substances. Sites managed under this program are referred to as "Superfund" sites. There are 40,000 federal Superfund sites across the country, and approximately 1,300 of those sites have been listed on the National Priorities List (NPL). Sites on the NPL are considered the most highly contaminated and undergo longer-term remedial investigation and remedial action (cleanups). Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is an organochlorine compound used as a pesticide and a disinfectant. First produced in the 1930s, it is marketed under many trade names. It can be found as pure PCP, or as the sodium salt of PCP, the latter of which dissolves easily in water. It can be biodegraded by some bacteria, including ''Sphingobium chlorophenolicum''. Uses PCP has been used as a herbicide, insecticide, fungicide, algaecide, and disinfectant and as an ingredient in antifouling paint.
