Davis Chester Katsonga (born 6 August 1955) is a Malawian politician. He gained the position of defence minister on 1 June 2006 during a cabinet reshuffle. Politics of Malawi takes place in a framework of a presidential representative democratic republic, whereby the President of Malawi is both head of state and head of government, and of a multi-party system. Catherine Gotani Hara
Catherine Gotani Hara is a Malawian politician who has been the Speaker of the National Assembly since June 2019, the first woman to hold the position. Early life and education Gotani Hara attended Kamuzu Academy, and has a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Chancellor College at the University of Malawi. While studying, she ran the University's wing of the Malawi Congress Party. From 1998 to 2000, she completed professional postgraduate training in International Development and Project Planning and Management Brighton. Richard Msowoya is a Malawian politician who served as Speaker of the National Assembly of Malawi from 2014 to 2019. Msowoya served as Deputy Minister of Education in Bingu wa Mutharika's cabinet but he resigned following the introduction of the controversial 'equitable' selection of students into Malawian public higher education institutions, dubbed, 'the quota' system which, presumably, disenfranchises capable students from more populous and intellectually more gifted districts. Henry Chimunthu Banda is a Malawian politician who was the Speaker of the National Assembly of Malawi from May 2009 to May 2014. He was elected in 2009 as the Chair of the 19 member Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Africa region. He also served for a time as Minister of Energy and Minister of Mining, Youth Sports and Culture. Early life and education Banda is from Chipembere village in Nkhotakota District, Central Malawi. Louis Chimango
Louis Joseph Chimango (born 19 October 1943) was a long-time cabinet minister in Late Hastings Kamuzu Banda's cabinet from 1978 to 1994. He had trained as a lawyer and later on as a barrister from Grays Inn in London. He later taught at the law school at Chancellor College in Zomba, a constituent of the University of Malawi, from 1970, before being nominated for politics in 1978. He left the law school when he was the dean of the Faculty of Law. During Late Kamuzu Banda's time he held a number of cabinet portfolios including those of Minister of Finance (1980-1981 and 1987-1994), Health, Local Government, and Education, among others. After Late Kamuzu's defeat in the 1993 referendum he maintained his seat in Parliament and was later elected Speaker of the National Assembly of Malawi from June 2005-June 2009. Sam Mpasu
Sam Mpasu (17 September 1945 – 15 February 2018) was a Malawian politician, author, and former diplomat. He served as Minister of Commerce, Secretary General of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in 1999, and speaker of the Malawi National Assembly. Early life Mpasu was a student at Dedza secondary school and went to University of Malawi's Chancellor College. Career Mpasu served as a diplomat in the foreign service for the Malawi mission to Germany. While in Germany he wrote a book in 1975 entitled ''Nobody's Friend'', which got him arrested because the Kamuzu Banda regime thought that it was written about Kamuzu Banda. Mpasu was detained without trial for "two years, one month, one week, and one day" in Mikuyu Prison from 1975 to 1977. The National Assembly of Malawi is the supreme legislative body of the nation. It is situated on Capital Hill, Lilongwe along Presidential Way. The National Assembly alone possesses legislative supremacy and thereby ultimate power over all other political bodies in Malawi. Rodwell Thomas Changara Munyenyembe (1 January 1936 – 27 June 2005) was a Malawian politician who served twice as Speaker of the National Assembly, from 1994 to 1999 and again from 2004 until his death. He also twice served as a cabinet minister, in the governments of Hastings Banda and Bakili Muluzi. He worked as a teacher prior to entering politics. Early life Munyenyembe was born in Nthalire, a village in the Chitipa District of the Northern Region.
