Sculpture is the branch of the visual arts that operates in three dimensions. Sculpture is the three-dimensional art work which is physically presented in the dimensions of height, width and depth. It is one of the plastic arts. Durable sculptural processes originally used carving (the removal of material) and modelling (the addition of material, as clay), in stone, metal, ceramics, wood and other materials but, since Modernism, there has been an almost complete freedom of materials and process. A wide variety of materials may be worked by removal such as carving, assembled by welding or modelling, or moulded or cast. Sculpture in stone survives far better than works of art in perishable materials, and often represents the majority of the surviving works (other than pottery) from ancient cultures, though conversely traditions of sculpture in wood may have vanished almost entirely. Stojan Batič
Stojan Batič (2 June 1925 – 17 September 2015) was a Slovene sculptor. Mostly a figurative artist, he is particularly known for his sculptures exhibited in many public places in Slovenia. Life Batič was born in a working-class family in Trbovlje, a mining town in central Slovenia, then part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. As a teenager, he worked in the local coal mine. At the age of 19, he joined the partisan resistance and fought the invading Nazi German forces. After World War II, he was the first to enroll at the newly established Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Ljubljana, where he studied sculpture under Boris Kalin and Frančišek Smerdu. In 1957, he received a scholarship, which enabled him to study in Paris with the sculptor Ossip Zadkine. Batič lived and worked in Ljubljana. In 1995, he had a show at Ljubljana City Gallery. Jakov Brdar
Jakov Brdar (born 22 April 1949) is a Slovene sculptor of Bosnian descent. He is the author of many public statues and sculptures in Ljubljana. In 1998, he received the Prešeren Fund Award for the sculpture group ''Pridiga ptičem'' (Sermon to the Birds, 1997). Brdar studied sculpturing on Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana. He graduated in the class of professor Dušan Tršar in 1975, and completed specialised study in 1979. He has also lived and worked in Paris and Berlin. Brdar's statues ''Adam and Eve'', ''Satyr'' and ''Prometheus'' are on display at the Butchers' Bridge in Ljubljana city centre. His statue of the general Rudolf Maister is visible in the park next to the main bus station in Ljubljana. He also created a statue of "Saint Joseph in the Egipt". The statue stands in front of the St. Stanislaus Institute in Ljubljana-Šentvid. The gallery in Piran has his sculpture ''Pegasus'' (1990). Boris Kalin
Boris Kalin (24 June 1905 – 22 May 1975) was a Slovene sculptor. He mainly created classical figures, public monuments, and nudes. Some of his sculptures are kept at Brdo Castle as part of its collection of modern Slovene art. Biography Kalin was born in Solkan, which was then a suburb of the Austro-Hungarian town of Gorizia and is now part of Nova Gorica, Slovenia. He attended the technical secondary school in Ljubljana and continued his studies between 1924 and 1929 at the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts with the professors Rudolf Valdec, Frano Kršinić, Ivo Kredić, and Ivan Meštrović. From 1945 to 1970, Kalin taught sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana; he was also its dean for two terms. He taught many younger colleagues that became prominent European artists. Tone Kralj
Tone Kralj (23 August 1900 – 9 September 1975) was a Slovene sculptor and painter also known for his wall paintings and illustrations. Kralj was born in Zagorica near Dobrepolje in Lower Carniola in 1900. He studied sculpture in Prague between 1920 and 1923 and then in Vienna, Paris, and Venice. Some of his best-known works are the wall paintings in various churches. His 1954 illustrations for Fran Levstik's Martin Krpan are also some of the most iconic images for the story. He won the Levstik Award in 1950 for his illustrations for ''Pravljica o carjeviču Jeruslanu'' (The Story of Prince Jeruslan). He died in Ljubljana in 1975. Slobodan Pejić
Slobodan Pejić (19 June 1944 – 25 August 2006) was a Bosnian sculptor and painter who lived for most of his life in Slovenia. He is best known after having transformed a 300-year-old oak tree that fell in the storm in Tivoli Park in Ljubljana into the sculpture ''Coexistence'' in 2000, proposing with the act the beginning of a sculpture garden (''forma viva'') in the park. He painted numerous frescos in Bosnia and Croatia. In addition, he invented a new technique in sculpture, based on moulding and gas expansion. He was for many years the Ljubljana correspondent of the Tanjug press agency. Life Pejić was born during a bomb raid of German forces in World War II, on a field, in Balatun, located north of Bijeljina in what is now Republika Srpska. Marko Pogačnik
Marko Pogačnik (born 11 August 1944) is a Slovenian artist and author. Background Pogačnik studied at the Academy of Arts in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, where he graduated in 1967. He was a co-founder of the neo-avantgarde artistic movement OHO, members of which were also Tomaž Šalamun and Slavoj Žižek. From the 1980s, he embraced a holistic vision of art. He claims to have developed a method of earth healing similar to acupuncture by using pillars and positioning them on so called 'lithopuncture' points of the landscape. In 1991, he designed the official coat of arms of the newly constituted Republic of Slovenia. In the year 2006, he joined the Movement for Justice and Development led by Janez Drnovšek, the President of Slovenia at the time. Miranda Rumina iránda rúminais a Slovenian Multimedia artist and writer. Life and work Rumina is a painter, sculptor, writer and multimedia artist. She graduated from the Economics Faculty of the University of Ljubljana and continued with the study of the English and Italian language with literature on the Faculty of Arts. Jakob Savinšek
Jakob Savinšek (4 February 1922 – 17 August 1961) was a Slovene sculptor, illustrator, and poet. Life Savinšek was born in the Upper Carniolan town of Kamnik, then part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (now in Slovenia), where he spent his youth. After finishing secondary school in Ljubljana, he studied medicine at the University of Ljubljana. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, he studied drawing under the tutorship of Rihard Jakopič and sculpture under the supervision of Karla Bulovec Mrak. During World War II and the Italian annexation of Ljubljana he was imprisoned in Ljubljana Castle for collaborating with the Liberation Front of the Slovenian People. In 1942, he was later sent to the Gonars concentration camp. He was released after the Italian armistice in September 1943. Joseph Urbania
Joseph Urbania (also Josef Urbanija or Josip Vrbanija) (February 16, 1877 – June 10, 1943) was a 20th Century Slovene Sculptor, who lived and worked in Austria for much of his life. His media was large-scale wood, stone, bronze and plaster religious sculptures for European cathedrals. Early life Joseph Urbania's mother Lucija was a housekeeper in the home of sculptor Franz Ksaver (1821–1888), who was the father of renowned sculptor Ivan Zajec. Urbania's step-father Josip Groselj (1854-1941) was one of his son's early teachers and an artistic assistant and heir to the senior Zajec workshop. Janez Zorko (born 1937 in Podgorje ob Sevnični) is a Slovenian sculptor and mountain climber. He attended art school from 1957 to 1959 in Ljubljana.
