State Council Of Ceylon
The State Council of Ceylon was the unicameral legislature for Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), established in 1931 by the Donoughmore Constitution. The State Council gave universal adult franchise to the people of the colony for the first time. It replaced the Legislative Council of Ceylon, the colony's original legislative body. There were only two State Councils: the First, elected in 1931, and the Second, elected in 1936. The 1947 Soulbury Constitution replaced the State Council with the Parliament of Ceylon, as part of a process of constitutional development leading up to independence, which took place on 4 February 1948. John Amaratunga
John Anthony Emmanuel Amaratunga ( Sinhala: ජෝන් ඇන්තනී එමානුවෙල් අමරතුංග) (born 21 May 1940) is a Sri Lankan politician and lawyer. He is a representative of Gampaha District for the United National Party in the Parliament of Sri Lanka. He resides in Kandana.He was the minister Tourism Development, Christian Religious Affairs and Land in the United National Party led government. Bernard Jayasuriya
Bernard Jayasuriya was a Ceylonese businessman and politician. Bernard Jayasuriya was the son of D. C. D. Jayasuriya, a rubber plantation and graphite mine owner. He received his education at S. Thomas College and St. Joseph's College, Colombo, where he captained the school's cricket team. He later played for the Singhalese Sports Club. He served as a member of the 2nd State Council of Ceylon, between February 1943 and 1947, for Avissawella, following the arrest and detention of the sitting member, Philip Gunawardena in July 1942. At the by-election on 27 February 1943 Jayasuriya secured 10,567 votes, 3,913 votes ahead of his nearest rival, S. T. D. Gunawardane. He was subsequently appointed to the Executive Committee for Labour, Industry and Commerce. Doric De Souza
Anthony Theodoric Armand "Doric" de Souza (1914–1987) was a Sri Lankan Trotskyist politician, Senator, Professor of English and a brilliant Marxist theoretician. Born to Goan journalist Armand de Souza, who was the editor of the '' Ceylon Morning Leader'' and a founding member of the Ceylon National Congress, Doric was educated at as a young child at St Bridgets Convent, and then at St. Joseph's College, Colombo as well the University College, Colombo where he graduated with a BA honours in English. Don Roy Zephrin Rajapakse (born 26 August 1905) was a Ceylonese politician. Don Roy Zephrin Rajapakse was born 26 August 1905 and received his education at St. Aloysius' College, Galle and Saint Joseph's College, Colombo. After leaving school he became a Sanitary Inspector and worked in that capacity for eight years. In 1941 he was elected to the Beralapanatara Village Committee and in 1957 became Chairman of the Committee, retaining that position until he was defeated at the village committee elections in 1961. At the 1st parliamentary elections, held in 1947, he ran as an independent for the seat of Deniyaya. He was unsuccessful coming third out of five candidates. Alfred Leo Saverimuthu Thambiayah ( ta, அல்பிரட் லியோ சவரிமுத்து தம்பிஐயா; (November 10, 1903 - October 1, 2009) was a Ceylon Tamil businessman, centenarian, politician and Member of Parliament. Early life and family Thambiayah was born on 8 November 1903 in Karampon on the island of Velanaitivu in northern Ceylon. His father was a ship owner in Kayts. Mahanama Samaraweera (12 October 1917 – 19 March 1966) was a Sri Lankan politician. He was a Cabinet minister and a member of parliament. Early life and education Mahanama Samaraweera was born on 12 October 1917 in Matara, the eldest of two sons of Don Francis Samaraweera, landowner and licensed surveyor, and Lydia Margaret Samaraweera (née Wickremasinghe). Don Francis remarried, after the death of his first wife, to Trincina Helena (née Samarajiva) and they had five children. Gate Mudaliyar Naganather Canaganayagam, CBE, JP, FREconS (27 May 1892 - 1 January 1967) was a Ceylonese banker, planter and local politician, who served as the first Tamil Mayor of Kandy in 1942. Suriyakumara Nichinga Senathiraja Ambalavaner Naganather Thandigai Canaganayagam was born on 27 May 1892 in Kopay, Jaffna, the son of Atikar Ambalavaner Naganather CBE JP, UM (1850-1953), a banker and rubber plantation owner, and Sethuppillai Ampalavanar. Canaganayagam attended Saint Joseph's College, Colombo, where he won prizes for Latin, French and Physics. He then attended the Ceylon Medical School leaving in his second year to become a banker.
