At the 6th parliamentary election, held on 22 March 1965, he lost the seat to Hettige by 2,023 votes. He ran again at the 7th parliamentary election, held on 27 May 1970, regaining the seat defeating the United National Party candidate, Harshanath Wanigasekera, by 9,473 votes. At the 1977 parliamentary elections Rajapaske was one of 21 sitting members of parliament who decided not to contest the elections.
