This List of Russian steam locomotive classes includes those built both before and during the Soviet era. They are to the gauge of unless otherwise stated. Some locomotives originally used in Poland during the period of the Russian Empire were built to and later converted to gauge. Wiener Neustädter Lokomotivfabrik
The ''Wiener Neustädter Lokomotivfabrik'' (Wiener Neustadt locomotive factory) was the largest locomotive and engineering factory in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During World War II the company produced armaments as part of Rax-Werk Ges.mbH which was associated with the Mauthausen concentration camp. History In 1841 the Wiener Neustadt-Vienna railway line was open, and in 1842 the private railway Austrian Eastern Railway (''Wien-Raaber-Eisenbahn'' or ''Raaber Bahn'') was opened, by 1854 the Semmering railway was complete. Thus around that time a favourable situation existed for the creation of a locomotive production facility in Austria. Russian Locomotive Class O
The Russian steam locomotive class O (from russian: Основной) was an early type of Russian steam locomotives. 9,129 locomotives were built between 1890 and 1928; hence it was the second most numerous class of locomotive in Russia, after E class, which was a unique number even on the international level. Variants Basic variants were early Od and OD (Russian: О''д'', OД) with Joy valve gear and most numerous later OV (OВ) with Walschaerts valve gear. Some locomotives were built as two cylinder simple expansion and others as two cylinder compounds. Henschel & Sohn
Henschel & Son (german: Henschel und Sohn) was a German company, located in Kassel, best known during the 20th century as a maker of transportation equipment, including locomotives, trucks, buses and trolleybuses, and armoured fighting vehicles and weapons. Georg Christian Carl Henschel founded the factory in 1810 at Kassel. His son Carl Anton Henschel founded another factory in 1837. In 1848, the company began manufacturing locomotives. The factory became the largest locomotive manufacturer in Germany by the 20th century. Henschel built 10 articulated steam trucks, using Doble steam designs, for Deutsche Reichsbahn railways as delivery trucks. Several cars were built as well, one of which became Hermann Göring's staff car. The Malyshev Factory ( uk , Завод імені В.О. Малишева, translit=Zavod imeni V.O. Malysheva; abbreviated ), formerly the Kharkov Locomotive Factory (, ), is a state-owned manufacturer of heavy equipment in Kharkiv, Ukraine. It was named after the Soviet politician Vyacheslav Malyshev. The factory is part of the State Concern UkrOboronProm (Ukrainian Defense Industry). It produces diesel engines, farm machinery, coal mining, sugar refining, and wind farm equipment, but is best known for its production of Soviet tanks, including the BT tank series of fast tanks, the famous T-34 of the Second World War, the Cold War T-64 and T-80, and their modern Ukrainian successor, the T-84. A Fairlie is a type of articulated locomotive, articulated steam locomotive that has the driving wheels on bogies. The locomotive may be double-ended (a double Fairlie) or single ended (a single Fairlie). Fairlies are most famously associated with the Ffestiniog Railway in North Wales. Kolomna Locomotive Works
The Kolomna Locomotive Works (Kolomensky Zavod) is a major producer of railroad locomotives as well as locomotive and marine diesel engines in Russia. The plant started production in 1869 with a freight steam locomotive, one of the first in Russia. In the Czarist period before the Russian Revolution, Kolomna was one of a very few producers in Russia. During this period 139 types of steam locomotives were designed.
