John Goodall
John Goodall (19 June 1863 – 20 May 1942) was a footballer who rose to fame as a centre forward for England and for Preston North End at the time of the development of the Football League, and also became Watford's first manager in 1903. He also played cricket in the County Championship for Derbyshire in 1895 and 1896, being one of 19 players to achieve the Derbyshire Double of playing cricket for Derbyshire and football for Derby County. He was also a curling player of some repute. Family and early life He was a son of Richard, a soldier in the Scottish Fusiliers from Fishcross, near Alloa in Clackmannanshire. His mother was Mary (maiden surname of Lees), and his parents were married on 31 December 1860 in Tarbolton, Scotland. Mary Lees was a daughter of Achibald Lees and his wife Elizabeth. The 1894–95 season was the 24th season of competitive football in England. 1893–94 In English Football
The 1893–94 season was the 23rd season of competitive football in England. Events Aston Villa won their first top-flight league title, beating Sunderland by 6 points. Villa's captain John Devey was the league's top-goal scorer with 20 goals. The 1893–94 season saw four of the most famous teams in English footballing history join the Second Division: Liverpool, Newcastle United, Manchester City, and the first team based in London, Woolwich Arsenal (later Arsenal). Other teams to join the expanded Second Division of 15 teams were Middlesbrough Ironopolis and Rotherham Town. Middlesbrough Ironopolis disbanded at the end of the season, having only completed one season in the Football League. Francis (Frank) Becton (11 May 1873 – 6 November 1909) was an English professional footballer at the turn of the 20th century. An inside forward, he turned out for Preston North End (in two separate spells), Liverpool, Sheffield United, Bedminster, Swindon Town, Ashton Town and New Brighton Tower. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981. After the creation of the Premier League, the name First Division was given to the second-tier division (from 1992). The name ceased to exist after the 2003–04 First Division season. The 1892–93 season was the 22nd season of competitive football in England. Events The Football League and the Football Alliance formally merged, and so the Football League Second Division was formed, consisting mostly of Football Alliance clubs. The existing League clubs, minus Darwen (who were relegated) plus three of the strongest Alliance clubs ( Nottingham Forest, Newton Heath and The Wednesday, who would later be renamed Manchester United and Sheffield Wednesday respectively), comprised the Football League First Division. The Second Division comprised the remaining Football Alliance teams, plus Northwich Victoria, Burslem Port Vale and Sheffield United. Jimmy Ross (footballer, Born 1866)
James Daniel Ross (28 March 1866 – 12 June 1902) was a Scottish footballer who played as an inside forward. Born in Edinburgh, in the beginning of his career Ross played for Edinburgh's St Bernard's; he came to prominence as part of the Preston North End team known as " The Invincibles", who won the Football League during its first and second seasons, the first one being a double of the league and the FA Cup. Nicknamed the "Little Demon", Ross's older brother Nick was also a footballer. Career Preston North End Pre-League era (1883–1988) Jimmy Ross came south to Preston to join his famous elder brother Nick. His debut for Preston North End happened by chance – he had to gone to Padiham on 24 November 1883 as a spectator to watch his brother play but, as the team were a couple of men short, he was invited to play. 1891–92 In English Football
The 1891–92 season was the 21st season of competitive football in England. Events Three new clubs joined the Football Alliance, following the expansion of the Football League to 14 teams, and the defection of Sunderland Albion to the Northern League. These new teams were Ardwick (later Manchester City), Burton Swifts and Lincoln City. Everton left Anfield on 15 March 1892 after a dispute with the stadium's landlord, John Houlding. Everton moved into a new stadium at nearby Goodison Park, while Houlding formed a new football club—Liverpool F.C.—on 30 March 1892, to play at Anfield. Preston North End set a new league record by winning 13 consecutive matches up to March 1892. A month later Sunderland equalled the record when they won their 13th successive game. The record of 13 consecutive wins in a single season stood for 125 years until broken by Manchester City in 2017. Hugh Gallacher (footballer, Born 1870)
Hugh Morgan 'Paddy' Gallacher (11 May 1870 – 20 May 1941) was a Scottish footballer who played in the Football League for Leicester Fosse, Preston North End and Sheffield United. Born in Galston in East Ayrshire he started his career with local side Maybole and had a spell at Celtic before moving to play in England. After leaving Leicester Fosse he spent time with Nelson and New Brompton before retiring. Career Having started his career with Maybole Gallagher moved to Celtic in the summer of 1889, where he played in their second ever league game against Cambuslang. Having failed to find a regular place in Celtic's team he moved to Preston North End in September 1890 where he found appearances easier to come by and his six goals that season left him as North End's top scorer.
