Cinema Of Portugal
The Cinema of Portugal started with the birth of the medium in the late 19th century. Cinema was introduced in Portugal in 1896 with the screening of foreign films and the first Portuguese film was '' Saída do Pessoal Operário da Fábrica Confiança'', made in the same year. The first movie theater opened in 1904 and the first scripted Portuguese film was ''O Rapto de Uma Actriz'' (1907). The first all-talking sound film, '' A Severa'', was made in 1931. Starting in 1933, with ''A Canção de Lisboa'', the Golden Age would last the next two decades, with films such as ''O Pátio das Cantigas'' (1942) and ''A Menina da Rádio'' (1944). Bruno de Almeida (11 March 1965) is an independent filmmaker whose body of work navigates between fiction and documentaries. He is also a composer. He is New York City and Lisbon-based. Biography Bruno de Almeida was born in Paris of Portuguese origins. He has lived between New York City and Lisbon since 1985. Career Bruno de Almeida started his artistic career has a musician in the New York downtown music scene in the mid 80's. He was a guitarist with Graham Haynes fusion band No Image playing in several clubs in New York City. Along with Mr. Haynes, he formed an experimental music duo playing in such places like The Knitting Factory and The Roulette. He played guitar with The Saheb Sarbib Quintet at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and had a Jazz duo with guitarist Sérgio Pelágio. Bruno de Almeida went on to compose music for film and dance pieces. Francisco Manso (born 28 November 1949), is a Portuguese filmmaker and producer. He is best known as the director of the critically acclaimed films, ''Napomuceno's Will'', '' The Consul of Bordeaux'' and ''O Nosso Cônsul em Havana''. Career He graduated in law at the University of Lisbon. In 1976, he graduated in film at Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual (Ar.Co) and, in 1979 to 1980, completed courses in sound engineering and became the assistant director at the public television service Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP). In 1978, he moved to cinema as the first assistant director for the film ''O Meu Nome É'', directed by Fernando Matos Silva. Manoel Cândido Pinto de Oliveira (; 11 December 1908 – 2 April 2015) was a Portuguese film director and screenwriter born in Cedofeita, Porto. He first began making films in 1927, when he and some friends attempted to make a film about World War I. In 1931 he completed his first film '' Douro, Faina Fluvial'', a documentary about his home city Porto made in the city symphony genre. He made his feature film debut in 1942 with ''Aniki-Bóbó'' and continued to make shorts and documentaries for the next 30 years, gaining a minimal amount of recognition without being considered a major world film director. Valeria Sarmiento
Valeria Sarmiento (born 29 October 1948) is a film editor, director and screenwriter best known for her work in France, Portugal and her native Chile. She has worked both in film and television, directing 20 feature films, documentaries and television series'. She is the widow of Chilean film director Raúl Ruiz (1941-2011) with whom she collaborated for decades as regular editor and co-writer. She has also edited films for Luc Moullet, Robert Kramer and Ventura Pons and is a Guggenheim Fellow (1988).
