List Of Nova Scotia Senators
This is a list of past and present members of the Senate of Canada representing the province of Nova Scotia. There are ten senators currently appointed with no vacancies. During the Quebec Conference of 1864, Nova Scotia was guaranteed ten Senate seats, but because Prince Edward Island stalled for equal representation in the upper house, Nova Scotia was awarded two of Prince Edward Island's Senate seats, until 1873 when Prince Edward Island gave in and joined confederation Nova Scotia dropped to 10 seats. The Senate of Canada (french: region=CA, Sénat du Canada) is the upper house of the Parliament of Canada. Together with the Crown and the House of Commons, they comprise the bicameral legislature of Canada. The Senate is modelled after the British House of Lords with members appointed by the governor general on the advice of the prime minister. The explicit basis on which appointment is made and the chamber's size is set, at 105 members, is by province or territory assigned to 'divisions'. Caleb Rand Bill (9 January 1806 – 1 February 1872) was a member of the Canadian Senate. Biography Born in Billtown, Nova Scotia, a town founded by his ancestors, he was a farmer before entering politics. In 1828, he married Rebecca Cogswell. He represented Kings County from 1855 to 1859 and the northern region of Kings County from 1863 to 1867 in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. A Liberal-Conservative, he was appointed to the Senate on 23 October 1867 by a royal proclamation of Queen Victoria following Canadian Confederation earlier that year. Robert Laird Borden
Sir Robert Laird Borden (June 26, 1854 – June 10, 1937) was a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the eighth prime minister of Canada from 1911 to 1920. He is best known for his leadership of Canada during World War I. Borden was born in Grand-Pré, Nova Scotia. He worked as a schoolteacher for a period and then served his articles of clerkship at a Halifax law firm. He was called to the bar in 1878, and soon became one of Nova Scotia's most prominent barristers. Adam Carr Bell (November 11, 1847 – October 30, 1912) was a Canadian politician. Born in Pictou, Nova Scotia, the son of Basil Bell and Mary Carr, Bell was educated in New Glasgow, Sackville Academy, and Glasgow University. From 1876 to 1877, he was the first mayor of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia (he was mayor again from 1884 to 1885). He was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in 1878. In 1882, he was Provincial Secretary in the cabinet of John Thompson. From 1882 to 1887 he was the Conservative Party leader and Leader of the Opposition. Augustus Irvine Barrow (February 15, 1913 – March 17, 2005) was a Canadian chartered accountant and Senator. He was born in Montreal, Quebec to Hartley F. Barrow and Margaret E. (Irvine). In 1918, at age five, his family moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia. He attended the Maritime Business College. After working as an accountant, he was admitted to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia in 1939. In 1946, he co-founded an accounting firm with J. C. Nicoll, which grew to have several branches in the Maritime provinces known as Barrow Nicoll & Company. Thomas Dickson Archibald
Thomas Dickson Archibald (8 April 1813 – 18 October 1890) was a Canadian businessman, politician, and senator. Born in Onslow, Nova Scotia, Archibald had by the early 1830s established himself as a businessman in the area surrounding Sydney, on Cape Breton Island, engaging in merchandising and goods transportation by ship. In 1854 he was appointed to the Legislative Council of Nova Scotia, and was its chairman in 1861. In 1860 he was appointed to the Executive Council of Nova Scotia for three years.
