This is a list of by-elections for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. A by-election may be held when a member's seat becomes vacant through resignation, death or some other reasons. These are referred to as casual vacancies. *Brackets around a date (D/M/Y) indicate that the candidate was unopposed when nominations closed or that, as a result of an appeal against an election result, the sitting member was replaced by the appellant. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Gladys Berejiklian
Gladys Berejiklian (born 22 September 1970) is an Australian former politician who served as the 45th premier of New South Wales and the leader of the New South Wales division of the Liberal Party from 2017 to 2021. Berejiklian became a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly after winning the electoral district of Willoughby in the 2003 state election. She was given the roles of Treasurer and Minister for Industrial Relations in the second Baird government, and Minister for Transport in the O'Farrell and first Baird governments. She was also the deputy leader of the New South Wales Liberal Party between 2014 and 2017. She assumed the role of premier after Mike Baird's resignation in January 2017. 2017 Cootamundra State By-election
A by-election was held in the state electoral district of Cootamundra on 14 October 2017. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Katrina Hodgkinson (). The by-election was won by Steph Cooke for the National Party on preferences. The Nationals suffered a 20% swing on first preference votes and 10% on a two-party basis. John Robertson (politician, Born 1962)
John Cameron "Robbo" Robertson (born 16 November 1962) is a former Australian politician who served as the leader of the Labor Party in New South Wales from 2011 to 2014. Before entering politics he was prominent in the union movement. Robertson was born in Sydney, and worked as an electrician before becoming an organiser for the Electrical Trades Union. He became an industrial officer with the Labor Council of New South Wales in 1991, and was elected assistant secretary in 1998 and secretary in 2001. He also served as a vice-president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions. Robertson entered the New South Wales Legislative Council in 2008, and was appointed to cabinet in 2009. He switched to the Legislative Assembly at the 2011 state election, where the Labor Party suffered a heavy defeat. An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. There are numerous reasons why someone may stand for office as an independent. Some politicians have political views that do not align with the platforms of any political party, and therefore choose not to affiliate with them. Joe McGirr
Joseph Gregory McGirr (born 19 June 1960) is an independent politician, and a physician and former associate dean of the University of Notre Dame Australia. He has been the member for Wagga Wagga in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly since the 2018 by-election. ABC News declared him the winner on 9 September, the day after the election, with the New South Wales Electoral Commission confirming it on 14 September. He came second to the Liberal candidate by only 28 votes after the Liberal primary vote almost halved from 2015, and was elected on Labor preferences. He had previously contested the seat in 2011 and received 30.6% of the first preference vote. Daryl Maguire
Daryl William Maguire (born 25 March 1959) is a former Australian politician who was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Wagga Wagga for the Liberal Party from 1999 to 2018. On 30 March 2011, Maguire was appointed to Government Whip in the O'Farrell- Stoner Liberal/National coalition government; he had been Opposition Whip for the Coalition since 2003. On 13 July 2018, after admitting at a corruption inquiry that he sought payment over a property deal, Maguire resigned from the Liberal Party. He resigned from Parliament on 3 August. 2018 Wagga Wagga State By-election
A by-election was held in the New South Wales state electoral district of Wagga Wagga on 8 September 2018. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Daryl Maguire, a Liberal-turned-independent. Maguire resigned from Parliament the previous month after admitting to a corruption inquiry that he sought payment over a property deal. The day after the vote ABC election expert Antony Green predicted the by-election would be won by independent candidate Joe McGirr. McGirr was later confirmed as the victorious candidate by the New South Wales Electoral Commission, winning 59.6% of the two-candidate preferred vote over Liberal candidate Julia Ham. The Liberal primary vote plunged by more than 28% – a loss of more than half of its primary vote from 2015–resulting in the seat falling out of Liberal hands for the first time since 1957.
