Senator For Life
A senator for life is a member of the senate or equivalent upper chamber of a legislature who has life tenure. , six Italian senators out of 206, two out of the 41 Burundian senators, one Congolese senator out of 109, and all members of the British House of Lords (apart from the 26 Lords Spiritual who are expected to retire at the age of 70) have lifetime tenure (although Lords can choose to resign or retire or can be expelled in cases of misconduct). Several South American countries once granted lifetime membership to former presidents but have since abolished the practice. Burundi In Burundi, former presidents of the Republic serve in the Senate for life. At present there are two of these: Sylvestre Ntibantunganya and Domitien Ndayizeye. Mobina S. B. Jaffer (born August 20, 1949) is a Canadian Senator representing British Columbia. Early life and career Born to a Pakistani family living in Africa, Jaffer was educated in England and Canada. She earned a law degree from the University of London in 1972 and attended the Executive Development program at Simon Fraser University. She lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. Jaffer is a past member of the Girl Guides of Canada who held many volunteer roles including as a Brownie, Guide, and Pathfinder Leader, and as an elected Commissioner. Jaffer has practised law in British Columbia since 1978 at the firm Dohm, Jaffer and Jeraj. She was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1998. Robert Jaffray
Robert Jaffray (January 23, 1832 – December 16, 1914) was a Canadians, Canadian grocer, publisher (''The Globe (Toronto newspaper), The Globe''), and politician. A Liberal Party of Canada, Liberal, he was appointed to the Senate of Canada on 8 March 1906 on the recommendation of Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Duncan Jessiman
Duncan James Jessiman, (June 5, 1923 – April 19, 2006) was a Canadian lawyer and Senator. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he received a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Law, and a Master of Law all from the University of Manitoba. During World War II, he served with the Royal Canadian Navy and was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant in 1945. From 1948 to 1971, he practiced law with the firm of Johnston, Jessiman & Gardner. In 1971, he became a senior partner at the law firm Pitblado & Hoskin. From 1956 to 1967, he was a lecturer in corporation law at the University of Manitoba. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1959. Marianna Beauchamp Jodoin
Marianna Beauchamp Jodoin (29 November 1881 – 4 January 1980) was a Liberal party member of the Senate of Canada. She was born in Montreal, Quebec. The daughter of Jean-Joseph Beauchamp and Élisa Décary, she was educated at the Convent d'Hochelaga. In 1905, she married Tancrède Jodoin. She was appointed to the Senate for the Saurel, Quebec division on 19 May 1953 following nomination by Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent. She remained in that role until her resignation on 1 June 1966. Jodoin was the first francophone French became an international language in the Middle Ages, when the power of the Kingdom of France made it the second international language, alongside Latin. Janis Guðrún Johnson (born April 27, 1946) is a Canadian retired senator who represented Manitoba. Early life and education Born in Winnipeg, Johnson's father, George Johnson, was the Minister of Health and Public Welfare in the Manitoba Legislature and later the province's Lieutenant Governor. Her mother, Doris Marjorie Blöndal, was of Icelandic ancestry. Archibald Johnstone
Archibald Hynd (Archie) Johnstone (June 12, 1924 – November 8, 2014) was a Canadian businessman and retired Senator. Born in Burlington, Prince Edward Island, he was a crew member with the Royal Canadian Air Force heavy bombing squadron during World War II. He worked with his father to develop Woodleigh Replicas in Burlington and was president of the Prince Edward Island Federation of Agriculture and director of the Island Tourism Association. John Walter Jones (April 14, 1878 – March 31, 1954) was a politician and farmer in Prince Edward Island, Canada. An agronomist, he was instrumental in introducing the potato crop to the island, which was to become a staple of the economy. Serge Joyal (born February 1, 1945) is a Canadian politician who served in the House of Commons of Canada from 1974 to 1984 and subsequently in the Senate of Canada from 1997 to 2020. Career A lawyer by profession, Joyal served as vice-president of the Quebec wing of the Liberal Party of Canada. He was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1974 general election and remained a Liberal Member of Parliament for ten years. In 1978, Joyal, along with a group of concerned Montreal citizens that included Nick Auf der Maur and Robert Keaton, co-founded the Municipal Action Group ("MAG").
