A senator for life is a member of the senate or equivalent upper chamber of a legislature who has life tenure. , six Italian senators out of 206, two out of the 41 Burundian senators, one Congolese senator out of 109, and all members of the British House of Lords (apart from the 26 Lords Spiritual who are expected to retire at the age of 70) have lifetime tenure (although Lords can choose to resign or retire or can be expelled in cases of misconduct). Several South American countries once granted lifetime membership to former presidents but have since abolished the practice. Alphonse Desjardins (politician)
Alphonse Desjardins, PC (6 May 1841 – 4 June 1912) was born in Terrebonne, Quebec and was mayor of Montreal from 1893 to 1894 and later a Canadian cabinet minister. He married Virginie Paré in 1864 and remarried Hortense Barsalou in 1880. He was a lawyer, journalist, businessman and politician. He owned a tile factory and participated in the founding of the Banque Jacques-Cartier, which later became part of the National Bank of Canada. He represented the riding of Hochelaga in the House of Commons for 18 years, serving as a cabinet minister and Minister of Militia and Defence for a few months at the end of the Mackenzie Bowell government and then the short-lived Tupper government in 1896. He was named a senator in 1892. He became mayor of Montreal from 1893–1894. For a time he held all three posts (member of the House of Commons, Senator, mayor) simultaneously. Jean-Paul Deschatelets
Jean-Paul Deschatelets, (October 9, 1912 – December 11, 1986) was a Canadian parliamentarian. Born in Montreal, Quebec, he was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in 1953 as a Liberal Member of Parliament for the riding of Maisonneuve—Rosemont. He was re-elected in 1957, 1958, 1962, and 1963. He was Minister of Public Works from 1963 to 1965. In 1966, he was appointed to the Senate representing the senatorial division of Lauzon, Quebec. He resigned in January 1986. He was the Speaker of the Senate of Canada from 1968 to 1972. Daniel Derbyshire
Daniel Derbyshire (December 11, 1846 – June 18, 1916) was a Canadian politician. Born in Plum Hollow, Leeds County, Canada West, the son of Harvey and Mary Derbyshire, Derbyshire was educated in Public Schools of the district and in the Athens High School. He received a first class normal certificate, after which he taught school for a few years. He later entered the dairy business and opened a Plum Hollow factory and another one in Athens. In 1881 he moved to Brockville, Ontario having accepted a position as representative of A. A. Ayer & Co. of Montreal. He later entered into the handling of butter and factory supplies. He was elected a member of the Brockville Council and was Mayor of Brockville in 1886 and 1889. He was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada for the riding of Brockville in the general elections of 1904.
