A senator for life is a member of the senate or equivalent upper chamber of a legislature who has life tenure. , six Italian senators out of 206, two out of the 41 Burundian senators, one Congolese senator out of 109, and all members of the British House of Lords (apart from the 26 Lords Spiritual who are expected to retire at the age of 70) have lifetime tenure (although Lords can choose to resign or retire or can be expelled in cases of misconduct). Several South American countries once granted lifetime membership to former presidents but have since abolished the practice. Thomas Dickson Archibald
Thomas Dickson Archibald (8 April 1813 – 18 October 1890) was a Canadian businessman, politician, and senator. Born in Onslow, Nova Scotia, Archibald had by the early 1830s established himself as a businessman in the area surrounding Sydney, on Cape Breton Island, engaging in merchandising and goods transportation by ship. In 1854 he was appointed to the Legislative Council of Nova Scotia, and was its chairman in 1861. In 1860 he was appointed to the Executive Council of Nova Scotia for three years. In 1867 he was appointed to the Senate of Canada and sat as a Liberal-Conservative. He died in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia. Jack Austin (politician)
Jacob "Jack" Austin (born March 2, 1932) is a former Canadians, Canadian politician and former member of the Senate of Canada. He was appointed to the upper house by Prime Minister of Canada, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau on August 8, 1975 and represented British Columbia. At the time of his retirement he was the longest-serving senator. Life and career Austin was born in Calgary, Alberta. Michèle Taïna Audette (born July 20, 1971) is a Canadian politician and activist. She has served as president of '' Femmes autochtones du Québec'' (Quebec Native Women) from 1998 to 2004 and from 2010 to 2012. Norman Atkins
Norman Kempton Atkins (June 27, 1934 – September 28, 2010) was a Canadian Senator and a political figure in Canada. Born in Montclair, New Jersey, Atkins was a graduate of Appleby College in Oakville and of Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, where he completed the Bachelor of Arts program in 1957. He subsequently received an Honorary Doctorate in Civil Law in 2000, from Acadia University. Martial Asselin
Joseph Ferdinand Martial Asselin, (February 3, 1924 – January 25, 2013) was a Canadian politician and the 25th Lieutenant Governor of Quebec (1990–1996). Life and career Born in La Malbaie, Quebec, the son of Ferdinand Asselin and Eugénie Tremblay, he was called to the Bar of Quebec in 1951. He became a Queen's Counsel in 1967. From 1957 to 1963, he was the mayor of La Malbaie. Asselin was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1958 election as a Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament in the Diefenbaker sweep. He represented the riding of Charlevoix. Walter Aseltine
Walter Morley Aseltine, (September 3, 1886 in Napanee, Ontario – November 14, 1971) was a Canadian parliamentarian. A farmer and lawyer by training, Aseltine ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons of Canada as the Conservative candidate for Rosetown, Saskatchewan in the 1926 election. In 1933, he was appointed to the Senate of Canada by R.B. Bennett. He became Government Leader in the Senate in 1958 under John Diefenbaker. He served in that position until 1962. Aseltine resigned from the Senate in March 1971 at the age of 84 for health reasons. He died eight months later. James Arthurs
James Arthurs (4 October 1866 – 7 October 1937) was a Canadian senator for the Conservative party, representing the province of Ontario. Arthurs attended public school and Hamilton Collegiate Institute, then became a hardware merchant. He became a member of the House of Commons of Canada for Parry Sound electoral district from 1908 until 1935. Arthurs was then appointed to the Senate of Canada on 20 July 1935 by R.B. Bennett and remained in that office until his death. The Commanda General Store in Gurd (now in Nipissing Township) was built and occupied by Arthurs about 1885. It was strategically located on the Rosseau-Nipissing Colonization Road. Joseph-Octave Arsenault (August 5, 1828 – December 14, 1897) was a Canadian politician who was the first Acadian from Prince Edward Island to be named to the Senate of Canada. Born in Cascumpec, Prince Edward Island, the son of Mélème Arsenault and Bibienne Poirier, he was a teacher, and later the owner of several businesses, including two general stores and a fish company. In 1867, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island for the riding of 3rd Prince and served for 28 years. Joseph-François Armand (14 December 1820 – 1 January 1903) was a member of the Senate of Canada. Born Joseph-Flavien Armand in Rivière-des-Prairies, Quebec, Rivière-des-Prairies, Lower Canada, he was a farming, farmer before entering politics. In 1858, he was elected to the Legislative Council of the Province of Canada in the Alma division and served until 1867.
