James Arthurs
James Arthurs (4 October 1866 – 7 October 1937) was a Canadian senator for the Conservative party, representing the province of Ontario. Arthurs attended public school and Hamilton Collegiate Institute, then became a hardware merchant. He became a member of the House of Commons of Canada for Parry Sound electoral district from 1908 until 1935. Arthurs was then appointed to the Senate of Canada on 20 July 1935 by R.B. Bennett and remained in that office until his death. The Commanda General Store in Gurd (now in Nipissing Township) was built and occupied by Arthurs about 1885. It was strategically located on the Rosseau-Nipissing Colonization Road. An Ontario Historical Plaque was erected by the province to commemorate The Commanda General Store's role in Ontario's heritage. Parry Sound (electoral District)
Parry Sound was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1904 to 1949. It was located in the province of Ontario. This riding was first created in 1903 from parts of Muskoka and Parry Sound riding. It consisted of the territorial district of Parry Sound. In 1933, it was expanded to include, in the territorial district of Nipissing, the townships of Ballantyne, Wilkes, Pentland, Boyd, Paxton, Biggar, Osler, Lister, Butt, Devine, Bishop, Freswick, McCraney, Hunter, McLaughlin, Bower, Finlayson, Peck, Canisbay and Sproule. The electoral district was abolished in 1947 when it was merged into Parry Sound—Muskoka riding. Gurd Township, Ontario
Gurd Township is an historical geographic township in central Ontario, Canada, in the Almaguin Highlands region of Parry Sound District. It was first surveyed in and was named after Robert Sinclair Gurd, a businessman and one-time mayor of Sarnia. In 1970, Gurd was annexed by the incorporated (Township municipality of) Nipissing. The township was shaped like an "L" wrapping around Nipissing. It was bounded on the north and northwest by Patterson Township on the west by Pringle Township, on the east and northeast by Nipissing, on the east by South Himsworth Township and on the south by Machar Township. It included the community of Hotham and part of Commanda. When it was annexed, Gurd had a population of 260 while Nipissing had 550. Today, the population is approximately 300 (419 including the nearby community of Alsace).
