Mauritians (singular Mauritian; french: Mauricien; Creole: ''Morisien'') are nationals or natives of the Republic of Mauritius and their descendants. Mauritius is a multi-ethnic society, with notable groups of people of South Asian (notably Indian), Sub-Saharan African (Mauritian Creoles), European (European Mauritians), and Chinese descent, as well those of a mixed background from any combination of the aforementioned ethnic groups. History Mauritian Creoles trace their origins to the plantation owners and people who were captured via the slave trade and brought to work the sugar fields. Plantation owners were predominantly of European ancestry while the enslaved people mostly had ancestry from continental Africa. When slavery was abolished on 1 February 1835, an attempt was made to secure a cheap source of adaptable labour for intensive sugar plantations in Mauritius. Viveka Babajee
Viveka Babajee (27 May 1973 – 25 June 2010) was a Mauritian model and actress. She held the titles of Miss Mauritius World 1993 and Miss Mauritius Universe 1994. She was best known for her KamaSutra condom advertisements in the 1990s, and for her involvement in the so-called "Manila Film Festival" scam of 1994. Babajee was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her apartment on 25 June 2010, at her Bandra residence in Mumbai. The police reports stated that she committed suicide due to depression. Early life The youngest of four sisters, Babajee was born in Port Louis, Mauritius on 27 May 1973. Her mother is Maharashtrian and was born in Hyderabad. Babajee moved to India in the mid-1990s. Diya Beeltah
Diya Beeltah is a Mauritian model who was crowned Miss Mauritius 2012. Beeltah was born on 8 August 1988 in Quatre Bornes, Mauritius. Beeltah attended the Baichoo Madhoo Government school and completed her bachelor's degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Mauritius. She was pursuing her bachelor while making her breakthrough in modeling. Beeltah was the first to represent Mauritius in the Miss Tourism World 2012 Beauty Contest which was held in Thailand. After reigning the title Miss Mauritius 2012, she became the ambassador and the national voice for road safety by the Mauritius Police Department and Ministry of Public Infrastructure, National Development Unit, Land Transport and Shipping National Development Unit. Laetitia Sauzier (née Darche, born 22 June 1991) is a Belgian born Mauritian model of Belgian and Mauritian descent. She was the winner of the Miss Mauritius 2010 beauty pageant. Early life Born in Uccle to Belgian father Michel and Mauritian mother Jacqueline, Darche spent her first three years of life in Mauritius. Her family then moved to Spain for ten years and to Belgium for the next five, where she would enjoy visiting her grandmother Rachelle in Jodoigne. Ameeksha Dilchand; (born 26 October 1988) is a Mauritian Beauty Pageant winner and former Miss Mauritius. Ameeksha attended the Notre Dame de la Confiance RCA school for her primary education then joined the Loreto College of Rose-Hill for her secondary studies. Ameeksha completed her LLB(hons) from University College London (UCL). She was crowned Miss Mauritius in the year 2011.
