Malta
Malta ( , , ), officially the Republic of Malta ( mt, Repubblika ta' Malta ), is an island country in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of an archipelago, between Italy and Libya, and is often considered a part of Southern Europe. It lies south of Sicily (Italy), east of Tunisia, and north of Libya. The official languages are Maltese and English, and 66% of the current Maltese population is at least conversational in the Italian language. Malta has been inhabited since approximately 5900 BC. Giovanni Attard
Giovanni Attard ( 1570–1636) was a Maltese architect, military engineer and stone carver from the town of Lija. He is mostly known for his role in the construction of the Wignacourt Aqueduct between 1610 and 1615. In 1609–10, he worked as a stone carver at the church of the Madonna tal-Għar and the adjoining Dominican priory at Rabat, along with stonemason Giuseppe Barbara. Attard was one of the ''capimastri'' (master builders) involved in the construction of the Wignacourt Aqueduct. In 1612, Bolognese engineer Bontadino de Bontadini Vittorio Bontadini, better known as Bontadino de Bontadini (died 1620), was a Bolognese hydraulic engineer, architect, mathematician and wood carver. Cesar Castellani
Cesar Castellani (died 2 August 1905) was an architect. He was born in Malta. He was attracted by the prosperity of British Guiana and emigrated there in 1860 with a group of Italian priests. Designs Castellani designed a number of prominent buildings in Guyana, including Brickdam Cathedral; Castellani House, once the Guyana Prime Minister's residence; the Brickdam Police Station; and the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. He made alterations and additions to the Church of the Sacred Heart on Main Street (1872-1882), which opened in 1861, for the colony's Madeiran labourers. The design of the Victoria Law Courts, credited to Baron Harco Theodor Hora Siccama, has Castellani's signature style, and Castellani was working for Siccama as a draughtsman. In 1875, he completed the installation of a sunken panelled ceiling of the Parliamentary chamber in the eastern wing of the Parliament Building. Vittorio Cassar
Vittorio Cassar ( mt, Vitor Cassar, 1550 – 1609), born Gio Vittorio Cassar, was a Maltese architect and military engineer. The son of the renowned architect Girolamo Cassar, he was admitted as a knight within the Order of St. John in 1587. He became the Order's resident engineer in the early 17th century, and he directed the upgrading of the Cittadella of Gozo between 1600 and 1603. Many details about his life are uncertain, including the dates of his birth and death. He is claimed to have designed some of the Wignacourt towers and several churches, but there is no evidence of these attributions. Girolamo Cassar
Girolamo Cassar ( mt, Ġlormu Cassar, 1520 – 1592) was a Maltese architect and military engineer. He was the resident engineer of the Order of St. John, and was admitted into the Order in 1569. He was involved in the construction of Valletta, initially as an assistant to Francesco Laparelli, before taking over the project himself. He designed many public, religious and private buildings in the new capital city, including Saint John's Co-Cathedral, the Grandmaster's Palace and the auberges. Michele Cachia
Michele Cachia ( mt, Mikiel Cachia; 30 September 1760 – 24 January 1839) was a Maltese architect and military engineer. He is also known for his role during the Maltese uprising of 1798–1800. Life Michele Cachia was born on 30 September 1760 in the town of Żejtun. He was the cousin of Antonio Cachia, another architect and engineer. In April 1784, he applied for the post of ''perito agrimensore''. Like his father and grandfather, Cachia also worked in the construction of the Żejtun Parish Church. He was also an adjutant within the Żejtun militia while Malta was ruled by the Order of St. John. Cachia took part in the Maltese uprising of 1798–1800 against the French occupation of Malta. Antonio Cachia
Antonio Cachia (1739–1813) was a Maltese architect, civil and military engineer and archaeologist who was active in the late 18th and early 19th century. He was the son of the architect Gio Domenico Cachia, who was possibly the same person as Domenico Cachia, the ''capomastro'' who supervised the construction of Auberge de Castille. He was a cousin of Michele Cachia, another architect and military engineer. Cachia became ''Capomastro delle Opere'' in 1779. Giuseppe Bonici
Giuseppe Bonici (1707–1779) was a Maltese architect and military engineer. He held the post of ''Capomastro delle Opere della Religione'' and was the principal architect of the Order of St. John from 1761 until his death. He designed several notable buildings; his masterpiece was the Customs House in Valletta. Biography Bonici began drawing architectural plans at a young age, and he was apprenticed to the Maltese architect Giovanni Barbara and later the French military engineer René Jacob de Tigné. He made plans for the St. Publius Parish Church in Floriana in 1734, which solidified his fame as a master of religious architecture. Giuseppe Bonavia
Giuseppe Bonavia (1821 – 2 September 1885) was a Maltese draughtsman and architect who was mainly active in the second half of the 19th century. Born in Valletta, he was initially a clerk of works with the Royal Engineers, before becoming the Head of the Civil Service Works Department. Bonavia designed in a variety of styles, including Gothic Revival and Neoclassical architecture. His signature buildings were those of the 1850s and 1860s. Lino Bianco (born 31 December 1965) is a Maltese architect, academic and diplomat. Biography Bianco graduated in philosophy (under Peter Serracino Inglott) and in architecture (under Richard England) at the University of Malta. He furthered his studies in industrial geology at the University of Leicester, and in architecture at The Bartlett Graduate School, University College London (under Adrian Forty). He achieved a doctoral degree in architecture and politics at the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, Sofia, under the academic supervision of Veselina Troeva, with a thesis on the development of Sofia.
