List Of MLAs Elected In The 1956 Gold Coast Legislative Election
This is a list of people elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Gold Coast on 17 July 1956. The membership was maintained at 104. Composition List of MPs elected in the general election General elections were held on to elect a parliament prior to the Gold Coast being granted independence from colonial rule by the United Kingdom. The new assembly was opened on 31 July 1956. A few days later, on 3 August 1956, a motion was passed by the new assembly authorising the government to request the government of the United Kingdom to enact an act of parliament to provide for the establishment of the Gold Coast as an independent sovereign nation with the name Ghana. Gold Coast (British Colony)
The Gold Coast was a British Crown colony on the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa from 1821 until its independence in 1957 as Ghana. The term Gold Coast is also often used to describe all of the four separate jurisdictions that were under the administration of the Governor of the Gold Coast. These were the Gold Coast itself, Ashanti, the Northern Territories Protectorate and the British Togoland trust territory. The first European explorers To arrive at the coast were the Portuguese in 1471. They encountered a variety of African kingdoms, some of which controlled substantial deposits of gold in the soil. In 1483, the Portuguese came to the continent for increased trade. They built the Castle of Elmina, the first European settlement on the Gold Coast. Isaac William Benneh
Isaac William Benneh was a Ghanaian politician. He served as a minister of state in various portfolios in the First Republic from 1960 to 1966. He also served as the member of the Berekum constituency from 1957 to 1966. Early life and education Benneh was born on 12 May 1912 at Berekum in the Bono Region of Ghana. He had his elementary education at Berekum and Abetifi where he obtained his Standard 7 certificate in 1930. Career After receiving two years training with Cadbury and Fry Company, Benneh became a cocoa broker for the Company in 1933. He rose through the ranks and became a supervisor of the company in 1951. Henry Sonnie Torgbor Provencal
Henry Sonnie Torgbor Provencal (1922-2007) was a Ghanaian politician. He was a member of parliament and a minister of state during the first republic. He served as the member of parliament for the Accra Central constituency from 1960 to 1965 and the member of parliament for the Gamashie constituency from 1965 to 1966. He also served as the Regional Commissioner for Greater Accra from 1965 to 1966. Early life and career Provencal was born on 24 December 1922. He left school in 1940 to join his uncle, a timber merchant, as his assistant. He worked with his uncle from then until 1946 when he joined his father's corn-mill business. Kwame Nkrumah
Kwame Nkrumah (born 21 September 190927 April 1972) was a Ghanaian politician, political theorist, and revolutionary. He was the first Prime Minister and President of Ghana, having led the Gold Coast to independence from Britain in 1957. An influential advocate of Pan-Africanism, Nkrumah was a founding member of the Organization of African Unity and winner of the Lenin Peace Prize from the Soviet Union in 1962. After twelve years abroad pursuing higher education, developing his political philosophy, and organizing with other diasporic pan-Africanists, Nkrumah returned to the Gold Coast to begin his political career as an advocate of national independence. Kofi Abrefa Busia
Kofi Abrefa Busia (born 11 July 1913 – 28 August 1978) was a Ghanaian political leader and academic who was Prime Minister of Ghana from 1969 to 1972. As a nationalist leader and prime minister, he helped to restore civilian government to the country following military rule. Early life and education Busia was born a Bono prince in the traditional kingdom of Wenchi, in the Brong Ahafo Region, one of the four Gold Coast Territories, then under British rule and now called Ghana. He was educated at Methodist School, Wenchi, Mfantsipim School, Cape Coast, then at Wesley College, Kumasi, from 1931 to 1932. Stephen Willie Yeboah (born 26 October 1928) was a Ghanaian politician. He served as a regional commissioner for the Brong Ahafo Region, the Ashanti Region and the Western Region. He also served as a member of parliament for the Sunyani West constituency and later the Dormaa constituency. Early life and education Yeboah was born on 26 October 1928 at Dormaa Akwamu, Brong Ahafo Region. Kwame Boahene Yeboah-Afari (13 November 1920 – 22 May 1996) was an educator and a politician. He served in various ministerial portfolios of the first republic including serving as Ghana's first Minister for Agriculture and the first Regional Minister for the Brong Ahafo Region. He also served as a member of parliament for the Sunyani East constituency. Samuel Antwi Kwaku Bonsu also known by the name Solomon Antwi Kwaku Bonsu was a Ghanaian politician in the first republic. Krobo Edusei
Krobo Edusei (26 December 1914 – 13 February 1984) was a Ghanaian politician and a high-profile member of Kwame Nkrumah's government. He was a popular, outspoken and prominent Ashanti activist and at the forefront of the Ghanaian independence movement, galvanising support amongst the Ashantis for Nkrumah's independence movement. Robert Okyere Amoako-Atta
Robert Okyere Amoako-Atta was a Ghanaian politician. During the first republic, he served as the Regional Commissioner (Regional Minister) for the Ashanti Region on three occasions. He also served as the Minister of Labour and Co-operative from 1960 to 1961 and the Regional Commissioner for the Brong Ahafo Region from 1963 to 1965. Obuasi (Ghana Parliament Constituency)
The Obuasi Constituency was a constituency in the Obuasi Municipal District in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. In 2003, the Electoral Commission of Ghana, created 30 new constituencies in the country by dividing certain already existing ones. With the Obuasi constituency, it was split into the Obuasi and Akrofuom with Obuasi and Akrofuom as their headquarters. The Obuasi constituency was further split in 2011 into the Obuasi West and Obuasi East constituencies.
