Note: This article uses Arabic naming customs: the name "al" (which means 'from a certain place') or "ibn" or "ben" (which means 'son of') are not used for alphabetical indexing. Faraj Abbo
Faraj Abbo al Numan ( ar, فرج عبو النعمان; November 21, 1921 – March 5, 1984), more commonly Faraj Abu, Faraj Aboo or simply Faraj Abou, was an influential Assyrian Iraqi artist, theatre director, designer, author and educator, noted as one of the early artists to integrate Arabic script into his abstract paintings and who achieved international recognition for his artwork. Life and career Faraj Abbo was born on 21 November 1921 in Mosul. His artistic talents were evident at a very young age. At 13 years, he was commissioned to produce paintings for local churches in Mosul; such as the work now in Mar Eshai Church. He received his early art education at the Baghdad Central Secondary School in 1939. He taught Art at Al Hilah High School in Al Hilah, Iraq, as well as the Teachers Centre in Baquba until 1945. House Of Khalifa
The House of Khalifa ( ar, آل خليفة, translit=Āl Khalīfah) is the ruling family of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The Al Khalifas profess Sunni Islam and belong to the Anizah tribe, some members of this tribe joined the Utub alliance which migrated from Central Arabia to Kuwait, then ruled all of Qatar, more specifically Al Zubarah, which they built and ruled over before settling in Bahrain in the early 17th century. The current head of the family is Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, who became the Emir of Bahrain in 1999 and proclaimed himself King of Bahrain in 2002, in fact becoming a constitutional monarch. Fadhil Al Azzawi
Fadhil Al Azzawi (Arabic: فاضل العزاوي ; born 1940 in Kirkuk, Iraq) is an Iraqi writer highly respected in the Arab world, as he has published ten volumes of poetry, six novels, three books of criticism and memoir, and several translations of German literary works. He participated in Iraq's avant-garde Sixties Generation, and his early controversial work was lauded with great enthusiasm. Life and career Fadhil Al Azzawi was born in Kirkuk in 1940. As a young boy, he was fascinated by the sound and rhythm of the '' Qu'ran'' and noticed that poetry was evident in Iraqi folklore such as the tales of the Arabian Knights. In the post war period, when contemporary poetry filtered into Iraq, Al Azzaawi quickly acquainted himself with its forms. He holds a BA in English Literature from Baghdad University. Dia Azzawi
Dia Al-Azzawi (Arabic: ضياء العزاوي) is an Iraqi painter and sculptor, now living and working in London, and one of the pioneers of modern Arab art. He is noted for incorporating Arabic script into his paintings. Active in the arts community, he founded the Iraqi art group known as ''New Vision'' and has been an inspiration to a generation of young, calligraffiti artists. Life and career Dia al-Azzawi was born in al-Fadhil, an old traditional neighbourhood in Baghdad, in 1939. His father was a grocer in the city centre. Azzawi was the third of ten children in the family. Azzawi studied archaeology at the College of Arts in Baghdad, graduating in 1962 and later studied at the Institute of Fine Arts, under the guidance of the eminent Iraqi artist, Hafidh al-Droubi, and graduating in 1964. Apo Avedissian
Apo Avedissian (born 24 July 1990 in Baghdad, Iraq) is an Iraqi-American artist of Armenian descent, often working in film-making, painting, photography, and writing. Avedissian’s writing portfolio most notably includes the autobiographical book “Thirteen in Baghdad,” detailing his life as a teenager in Baghdad during the 2003 Iraq War. Personal life Avedissian started his path into the world of photography and his documentary style videography at the age of thirteen, at the beginning of the 2003 Iraq War. He was born to Armenian parents, both of whom were children/grandchildren of Armenian genocide survivors whose journey through the desert had ended in Iraq. He immigrated to the United States in 2005, and is fluent in Arabic, Armenian, and English - often using one or the other in his artwork. Halla Ayla
Halla Ayla (born in 1957) is an Iraqi American artist and self-taught photographer, currently living in San Francisco, CA. She is noted for her activism and is a champion of women's rights and also works to encourage peace and understanding between the Arab world and the West. These causes are reflected in her artwork. Early life and career Ayla was born Baghdad, Iraq and grew up in Baghdad and in Beirut, Lebanon. Ayla divided her time between Iraq, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, after which she lived in Europe for 15 years before travelling to the United States in 1991 and finally settling in San Francisco. Suad Al-Attar
Suad al-Attar (Arabic, سعاد العطار) (born 1942) is an Iraqi painter whose work is in private and public collections worldwide, including The British Museum and the Gulbenkian Collection. She has held over twenty solo exhibitions, including one in Baghdad that became the first solo exhibition in the country's history for a woman artist. Her many awards include the first prize at the International Biennale in Cairo in 1984 and an award of distinction at the Biennale held in Malta in 1995. Life and career Suad at-Attar painted from a very young age. She was "discovered" by the influential Iraqi artist, Jawad Saleem after exhibiting in a high school event. He encouraged her to exhibit in events staged by The Baghdad Modern Art Group, and she became one of the few women who participated in functions organised by such art groups. Layla Al-Attar
Layla Al-Attar ( ar, ليلى العطار; May 7, 1944 – June 27, 1993) was an Iraqi artist and painter who became the Director of the Iraqi National Art Museum. Through her art, al-Attar expressed ideals that attempted to recognize the importance of women in all spheres of society. Life and career Al-Attar graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad in 1965, and was among the first female graduates from that program. She became the Director of the Center for National Art (now the Iraqi Museum of Modern Art), a post she held until her death in 1993. Al-Attar held five one-woman shows in Iraq, and took part in all national and other collective exhibitions held in the country and abroad. Al-Attar also took part in the Kuwait Biennial (1973), the first Arab Biennial (Baghdad 1974), the second Arab Biennial (1976), the Kuwait Biennial (1981), and won the Golden Sail Medal in the Cairo Biennial (1984). Sinan Antoon
Sinan Antoon ( ar, سنان أنطون), is an Iraqi poet, novelist, scholar, and literary translator. He has been described as "one of the most acclaimed authors of the Arab world." He is an associate professor at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University. Life and career Antoon was born in 1967 in Baghdad. He received his B.A. in English with distinction from the University of Baghdad in 1990 with minors in Arabic and Translation. He left Iraq in 1991 after the onset of the Gulf War and moved to the United States. He completed an M.A. in Arab Studies from Georgetown University in 1995. In 2006, he received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in Arabic and Islamic Studies. Edward VIII (Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David; 23 June 1894 – 28 May 1972), later known as the Duke of Windsor, was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Empire and Emperor of India from 20 January 1936 until Abdication of Edward VIII, his abdication in December of the same year. Prince Of Wales
Prince of Wales ( cy, Tywysog Cymru, ; la, Princeps Cambriae/Walliae) is a title traditionally given to the heir apparent to the English and later British throne. Prior to the conquest by Edward I in the 13th century, it was used by the rulers of independent Wales. The first native Welsh prince was Gruffudd ap Cynan of Gwynedd, in 1137, although his son Owain Gwynedd (Owain ap Gruffudd) is often cited as having established the title.
