Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. Man-Mohan Bhandari
Man-Mohan Bhandari (born 26 February 1913, date of death unknown) was an Indian tennis player. He competed at the Wimbledon Championships twice, in 1934 and 1936. He was active from 1930 to 1942 contesting 3 career singles finals and won 1 title. Career Man-Mohan Bhandari was born in Lahore, India on 26 February 1913. Ramesh Krishnan
Ramesh Krishnan (born 5 June 1961) is a tennis coach and former professional tennis player from India. As a junior player in the late 1970s, he won the singles titles at both, Wimbledon and the French Open. He went on to reach three Grand Slam quarterfinals in the 1980s and was a part of the Indian team captained by Vijay Amritraj which reached the final of the Davis Cup in 1987 against Sweden. Krishnan also beat then-world No. 1, Mats Wilander, at the 1989 Australian Open. He became India's Davis Cup captain in 2007. Early life Ramesh was born in Madras, India, and is the son of Ramanathan Krishnan who reached the Wimbledon semifinal twice in the 1960s. Sydney Jacob
Sydney Montague Jacob (28 October 1879 – 14 February 1977) was an Anglo-Indian tennis player who represented India at the Davis Cup and Olympic Games. He competed in the singles event at the 1924 Summer Olympics, reaching the quarterfinal in which he lost to Jean Borotra. With compatriot Mohammed Sleem he competed in the men's doubles event and reached the second round. He also competed in the mixed doubles event, with compatriot Nora Polley, but lost their first match in the second round after a bye in the first round. Athar-Ali Fyzee
Athar-Ali Fyzee (28 August 1883 – 3 November 1963) was an Indian international tennis and table tennis player. He competed in the men's singles tennis tournament at the 1924 Summer Olympics. In a tennis career lasting 18 seasons from 1909 to 1934, he reached 21 finals and won 14 singles titles. Hassan Ali Fyzee
Hassan-Ali Fyzee (9 October 1879 – 1 January 1962) was an Indian tennis, badminton, and table tennis player. Table tennis Hassan-Ali Fyzee took part in the first 1926 World Table Tennis Championships in London. Here he won the bronze medal with the Indian men's team, in which also his brother Athar-Ali Fyzee, active in the Davis Cup, played. In 1926, he was president of the Table Tennis Federation of India. At the end of 1926, he took over organizational tasks in the newly founded International Table Tennis Federation as an assessor. Tennis Fayzee's career singles match record was 223-116 (65.7%). Mark Ferreira
Mark Ferreira (born 1 March 1967) is a former professional tennis player from India. He is the son of former Indian billiards player Michael Ferreira. Biography Born in Bombay, he did his schooling from St Andrew's High School Bandra. He studied economics at UCLA and played on the collegiate tennis team. At the 1988 Wimbledon Championships, Ferreira and partner Zeeshan Ali made the main draw as lucky losers and reached the second round. Ferreira competed in the doubles main draws of Grand Prix tournaments at Seoul and Singapore in 1989. He represented both India and Hong Kong in Davis Cup competition. In 1989 he featured in a tie for India against South Korea, appearing in the doubles rubber with Zeeshan Ali, which they lost in four sets. Somdev Devvarman
Somdev Kishore Devvarman (born 13 February 1985) is a former professional Indian tennis player. He hit the headlines for being the only collegiate player to have made three consecutive finals at the NCAA, winning back-to-back finals in his junior and senior years at the University of Virginia. Only three other players have matched that record since 1950. His 44–1 win–loss record in 2008 at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship is unprecedented. His best achievement on the ATP World Tour was reaching the final of the Chennai Open in 2009, as a wild card entry. In 2010, Somdev won the gold medal in the men's singles event of XIXth Commonwealth Games at the R.K. Lewis Deane
Lewis Seymour Deane (12 March 1882 – 18 December 1934) was an Anglo-Indian tennis player. Born in Meerut, Deane was the second son of British Indian Army captain George Deane of the Bengal Lancers. Deane, a champion of Bengal and Punjab, played in India's first ever Davis Cup team in 1921, with the side going through to the semi-finals. He twice reached the Wimbledon men's doubles semi-finals (with Sydney Jacob in 1921 & Hassan Ali Fyzee in 1923) and was a mixed doubles finalist at the 1923 Wimbledon Championships. Dilip Bose
Dilip Kumar Bose (1921 – 30 December 1996) was an Indian professional tennis player. He was a winner of the Asian championship and a member of the India Davis Cup team. After retirement, he served as a coach and administrator. The All India Tennis Association instituted a lifetime achievement award in his name in 2002. Bose won the single's event in the inaugural Asian Championships in 1949 at his club, the Calcutta South Club in Calcutta. As a result, he was seeded 15 at the Wimbledon in 1950. He conceded the second round match, upon retiring, to Hans van Swol of the Netherlands with the score 6–4, 5–4 in the latter's favour. He had only recovered from a heavy attack of malaria a few days prior and was advised by doctors against playing.
