Houston Aeros (WHA)
The Houston Aeros were a professional ice hockey team in the World Hockey Association (WHA) from 1972 to 1978. Franchise history The Aeros were originally slated to play in Dayton, Ohio, as a charter member of the WHA. However, Dayton residents were indifferent at best to a WHA team, and while there were questions regarding whether a U.S. market with less than a million people and a stagnating economy would support a major league hockey franchise in the long term, the more critical short-term problem was that Dayton did not have a suitable arena. The largest arena in the city, the University of Dayton Arena, did not have an ice plant and the university balked at the cost of installing one. The largest hockey venue, Hara Arena, seated only 5,000 people—not enough even for temporary use. Due to these problems, owner Paul Deneau moved the team to Houston, Texas. Edward Adrian Hoekstra (November 4, 1937 – November 10, 2011) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. John Donald "Don" Larway (February 12, 1954 – November 9, 2019) was a professional ice hockey player who played 324 games in the World Hockey Association (WHA). André Lacroix (ice Hockey)
André Joseph Lacroix (born June 5, 1945) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player in the National Hockey League and the World Hockey Association, and is the WHA's all-time leading career scorer. Playing career A centre notable for his playmaking, penalty-killing, and faceoff skill, Lacroix played junior hockey for the Peterborough Petes, leading the league in assists in both the 1964–65 and 1965–66 seasons and in points the latter season. He then played two seasons for the minor-league Quebec Aces of the AHL, playing brilliantly in the 1968 season before being recalled by the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL in the spring of 1968. Paired on a forward line with fellow ex-Quebec wingers Jean-Guy Gendron and Simon Nolet, he was an immediate star, leading the Flyers in scoring in both 1969 and 1970. John Spencer Hughes (March 18, 1954 – April 8, 2020) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. Career The bulk of his professional career was spent in the World Hockey Association (WHA), where he played from 1974 until 1979 for the Phoenix Roadrunners, Cincinnati Stingers, Houston Aeros, Indianapolis Racers, and Edmonton Oilers. When the WHA folded in 1979, Hughes moved to the National Hockey League (NHL), briefly playing for the Vancouver Canucks, the Oilers (who joined the NHL), and New York Rangers. He retired in 1982. Hughes had 18 goals, 130 assists, 148 points and 778 penalty minutes in 372 regular season games in the WHA and two goals, 14 assists, 16 points and 211 penalty minutes in 70 regular season games in the NHL.
