Hmong People
The Hmong people ( RPA: ''Hmoob'', Nyiakeng Puachue: , Pahawh Hmong: , ) are a sub-ethnic group of the Miao people who originated from Central China. The modern Hmongs presently reside mainly in Southwest China (Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, and Guangxi) and countries in Southeast Asia such as Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar. There is also a very large diasporic community in the United States, comprising more than 300,000 Hmong. The Hmong diaspora also has smaller communities in Australia and South America (specifically Argentina and French Guiana, the latter being an overseas region of France). During the First and Second Indo-China Wars, France and the United States intervened in the Lao Civil War by recruiting thousands of Hmong people to fight against forces from North and South Vietnam, which were stationed in Laos in accordance with their mission to support the communist Pathet Lao insurgents. Cherzong Vang
Cherzong Vang (April 13, 1943 – November 10, 2012) was an American community leader from St. Paul, Minnesota. He was an elder of the Hmong people in Laos and the Lao-American community in the Twin Cities of the United States. Cherzong worked with students, including many Hmong-American students, in the St. Paul, Minnesota school system, whose parents came to the United States in the 1970s, 80s and 90s as political refugees fleeing persecution by the Pathet Lao government in Laos. Life and career Born on April 13, 1943, in Xiangkhouang Province, Laos, Cherzong Vang was one of the first Hmong educators in Laos, and the United States, and served in the U.S. "Secret Army" and Royal Lao Army in the Kingdom of Laos during the Vietnam War. The Minnesota Senate is the upper house of the Legislature of the U.S. state of Minnesota. Foung Hawj
Foung Hawj ( ; ; lo, ຝົງ ເຮີ; RPA: Foom Hawj; Pahawh: ) is an American media producer and politician who is a member of the Minnesota Senate. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), he represents District 67, which includes the east side of Saint Paul in Ramsey County. Early life, education, and career Foung was born in Laos. His father was a military diplomat overseeing air deliveries of humanitarian cargo in Vientiane and Long Tieng. His mother, a country girl without education, learned to operate a pharmacy in Ban Xon City. Foung grew up during the Vietnam War and lived in refugee camps with his family before coming to the United States. Doua Moua (born February 7, 1987) is an American actor and writer best known for his roles as Spider in the 2008 film ''Gran Torino'' and Po in Disney's live-action ''Mulan''. Background Doua Moua was born in a refugee camp in Thailand to Laos-born parents of Hmong descent who had fled their homeland because of the Laotian Civil War. Dia Cha is a notable Laotian American author and academic who has written books for both children and adults. Early life She was born in the early 1960s in Southeast Asia. She and her family members immigrated to the USA as refugees After the Vietnam War. In 1975, Dia and the surviving members of her family, were forced to flee the advancing communist movement, Pathet Lao in their takeover of her home country of Laos. She soon found herself a refugee in Thailand. She eventually settled in the United States in 1979, where she was able to begin formal studies in the ninth grade. In 1983, she graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School, in Denver, Colorado, ranking thirtieth in a class of 251 students. Cy Thao
Cy Thao (born March 2, 1972) is a Laos, Laotian-born Hmong American politician who served as a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2003 to 2011. Early life and education In 1975, Thao's family fled from Communists in Laos and lived in a refugee camp in Thailand until moving to the United States in 1980. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Boy Scouts of America and attained the rank of Eagle Scout (Boy Scouts of America), Eagle Scout. He credits Scouting with helping him blend into American society and teaching him the values of community obligation. Thao is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Morris (UMM). Career A Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, Democrat, Thao was first elected in 2002. He did not seek re-election in 2010, and left office on January 3, 2011. Nyiakeng Puachue Hmong
Nyiakeng Puachue Hmong (Hmong: ; RPA: ''Ntawv Nyiajkeeb Puajtxwm Hmoob'') is an alphabet script devised for White Hmong and Green Hmong in the 1980s by Reverend Chervang Kong for use within his United Christians Liberty Evangelical Church. The church, which moved around California, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Colorado, and many other states, has used the script in printed material and videos. It is reported to have some use in Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, France, and Australia. The script bears strong resemblance to Thai script in structure and form and characters inspired from the Hebrew alphabet, although the characters themselves are different.
