Bartram Canoe Trail
The Bartram Canoe Trail is a system of canoe and kayak water trails in the Mobile–Tensaw River Delta of Alabama. Named for explorer and naturalist William Bartram, the 200-mile-long trail system is one of the longest in the United States. It includes bottomland hardwood swamp, creeks, side channel sloughs, lakes and backwaters. The system also includes Bottle Creek which is near the Bottle Creek Indian Mounds. Lillian, Alabama
Lillian is an unincorporated community in eastern Baldwin County, Alabama, United States. Lillian is located on U.S. Route 98 on the western shore of Perdido Bay, east of Elberta. Its eastern edge lies on the Alabama/Florida state line. Demographics History The community was named for Lillian Kee, the daughter of William Thomas Kee, postmaster. In 1630, the King of Spain gave land grants to the Suarez family that included the current site of Lillian. The Baldwin Colonization Company purchased the area around Lillian in 1923 to promote the area as a resort location. Lillian was once home to a school and hotel. The hotel was originally located in Elberta then dismantled and moved to Lillian. The Lillian post office was established in 1884. The Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is a field laboratory and research facility along Weeks Bay estuary, about in size. It receives freshwater from the Magnolia and Fish Rivers, and drains a watershed into the portion of Mobile Bay via a narrow opening. This sub-estuary of Mobile Bay averages just 4.8 ft (1.5 meters) deep and is fringed with marsh (Spartina, Juncus) and swamp (pine, oak, magnolia, maple, cypress, bayberry, tupelo and others). The reserve lands also include upland and bottomland hardwood forests, freshwater marsh ( Typha, Cladium), submerged aquatic vegetation (Ruppia, Vallisneria) and unique bog habitats (Sarracenia, Drosera). The City of Foley Antique Rose Trail, also known as the Wilbourne Antique Rose Trail, or just the Antique Rose Trail is a one-mile long asphalt-covered rail trail in Foley, Alabama. Opened in 2007, it passes through downtown Foley and features many different types of roses along the trail. It was designated as a National Recreation Trail in 2011. History The trail used to be a section of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad (L&N). Following the formation of the L&N's Bay Minette-Fort Morgan Railway in 1905, the town's founder, John B. Foley, paid to create an extension from Bay Minette to Foley. It was finished in 1907. When it was completed, the Bay Minette-Fort Morgan Railway moniker was scrapped, simply calling it the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge
Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge located in five separate units in Baldwin and Mobile Counties, United States, directly west of Gulf Shores, Alabama on the Fort Morgan Peninsula. The refuge serves as a resting and feeding area for migratory birds and as a sanctuary for native flora and fauna. The refuge is one of the largest undeveloped parcels of land on the Alabama coast. Established in 1980, Bon Secour (the name, in French, means "safe harbor") is smaller than most other national wildlife refuges, and is divided into Sand Bayou, Perdue, Little Point Clear, Fort Morgan, and Little Dauphin Island. Bay Minette, Alabama
Bay Minette is a city in and the county seat of Baldwin County, Alabama, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city was 8,044. History In the first days of Baldwin County, the town of McIntosh Bluff (now in Mobile County, west of Baldwin County) on the Tombigbee River was the county seat. After being transferred to the town of Blakeley in 1810, the county seat was later moved to the city of Daphne in 1868. In 1900, by an act of the legislature of Alabama, the county seat was authorized for relocation to the city of Bay Minette; however, the city of Daphne resisted relocation. The citizens of Bay Minette moved the county records from Daphne in the middle of the night on October 11–12, 1901 and delivered them to the city of Bay Minette - where the Baldwin County seat remains to this day.
