List Of Criterion Collection LaserDiscs
The following is a list of LaserDiscs released by The Criterion Collection from 1984 to 1998. These LaserDiscs are now out of print. Films that have appeared on List of Criterion Collection releases, Criterion Collection DVD releases are noted with their corresponding DVD spine numbers in the following list. However, not all Criterion LaserDiscs have been re-issued by Criterion on DVD, and not all Criterion DVD releases appeared on LaserDisc. LaserDisc spine #003–005 also had simultaneous, now very rare VHS releases and at least one was also issued on Betamax. They were later re-released on VHS along with new Janus Films titles through Home Vision Entertainment. Releases ''François Truffaut: 25 Years, 25 Films'', intended to be included in Truffaut Trio, was released separately as a Voyager LaserDisc [V1067L]. The LaserDisc (LD) is a home video format and the first commercial optical disc storage medium, initially licensed, sold and marketed as DiscoVision, MCA DiscoVision (also known simply as "DiscoVision") in the United States in 1978. Its diameter typically spans . Unlike most optical disc standards, LaserDisc is not fully Digital data, digital, and instead requires the use of analog video signals. Although the format was capable of offering higher-quality video and audio than its consumer rivals—VHS and Betamax videotape—LaserDisc never managed to gain widespread use in North America, largely due to high costs for the players and the inability to record TV programmes. It eventually did gain some traction in that region and became somewhat popular in the 1990s. It was not a popular format in Europe and Australia. The Third Man
''The Third Man'' is a 1949 British film noir directed by Carol Reed, written by Graham Greene and starring Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, Orson Welles, and Trevor Howard. Set in postwar Vienna, the film centres on American Holly Martins (Cotten), who arrives in the city to accept a job with his friend Harry Lime (Welles), only to learn that Lime has died. Viewing his death as suspicious, Martins elects to stay in Vienna and investigate the matter. The atmospheric use of black-and-white expressionist cinematography by Robert Krasker, with harsh lighting and largely subtle "Dutch angle" camera technique, is a major feature of ''The Third Man''. Combined with the iconic theme music by zither player Anton Karas, seedy locations and acclaimed performances from the cast, the style evokes the atmosphere of an exhausted, cynical post-war Vienna at the start of the Cold War.
