Cinema in Canada dates back to the earliest known display of film in Saint-Laurent, Quebec, in 1896. The film industry in Canada has been dominated by the United States, which has utilized Canada as a shooting location and to bypass British film quota laws, throughout its history. Canadian filmmakers, English and French, have been active in the development of cinema in the United States. Films by Thomas A. Edison, Inc. were some of the first to arrive in Canada and early films made in the country were produced by Edison Studios. ''Away from Her'' is a 2006 Canadian independent drama film written and directed by Sarah Polley and starring Julie Christie and Gordon Pinsent. Caroline Dhavernas (; born May 15, 1978) is a Canadian actress. She is best known in the United States for her collaborations with Bryan Fuller. She played Jaye Tyler in the Fox comedy-drama series ''Wonderfalls'', and Alana Bloom in the NBC psychological horror drama series ''Hannibal''. She also starred as Lily Brenner in the ABC medical drama '' Off the Map''. Career Throughout most of her career, Carole Laure primarily collaborated with Anglophone singer, songwriter, producer, and director Lewis Furey, whom she met in 1977 and who later became her husband. ''The Beautiful Beast'' (french: La Belle bête) is a Canadian drama film, directed by Karim Hussain and released in 2006. An adaptation of Marie-Claire Blais's 1959 novel '' Mad Shadows (La Belle bête)'', the film centres on a dysfunctional family headed by single mother Louise (Carole Laure), who has an abusive relationship with her children Patrice (Marc-André Grondin) and Isabelle-Marie (Caroline Dhavernas). Kristen Thomson (born 1966) is a Canadian actress and playwright. Thomson was born in Toronto, Ontario. She is known for her one-woman play ''I, Claudia'', which was adapted to film in 2004. In that play and film, Thomson plays all of the roles, using masks to change character. Thomson received her undergraduate training and University of Toronto's theatre school "University College Drama Program" currently under the tutelage of former Artistic Director of Factory Theatre's Ken Gass. Michael George Murphy (born May 5, 1938) is an American film, television and stage actor. He often plays unethical or morally ambiguous characters in positions of authority, including politicians, executives, and lawyers. Olympia Dukakis (June 20, 1931 – May 1, 2021) was an American actress. She performed in more than 130 stage productions, more than 60 films and in 50 television series. Best known as a screen actress, she started her career in theater. Not long after her arrival in New York City, she won an Obie Award for Best Actress in 1963 for her off-Broadway performance in Bertolt Brecht's ''Man Equals Man''.
