List of British light-heavyweight boxing champions is a table showing the boxers who have won the British light-heavyweight title. The title has been sanctioned by the National Sporting Club since 1891, and later by its replacement British Boxing Board of Control since 1929. A champion may retire or voluntarily relinquish the title in order to fight for a higher-ranked championship. Don Cockell
Donald John Cockell (22 September 1928 – 18 July 1983) was an English boxer. He fought for most of his career as a light-heavyweight and became the British and European champion at that weight. Later in his career he moved up to heavyweight and held the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles. He is best remembered for fighting against Rocky Marciano for the world heavyweight championship. Cockell defeated a number of top heavyweights in his career, including Roland La Starza, Harry Matthews (three times), Tommy Farr, Freddie Beshore, Johnny Arthur, Johnny Williams and Uber Bacilieri. In his earlier incarnation as a Light Heavyweight he defeated top contenders such as Nick Barone, Albert Yvel, Lloyd Marshall and Albert Finch, holding regional titles in both weight incarnations. Tom Collins (boxer)
Tom Collins (born 1 July 1955) is British former boxer who held the British and European light heavyweight titles and fought for three world titles. Career Born in Curaçao, Collins was based in Leeds. He began his professional career in 1977 and won his first six fights before suffering his first defeat in May 1978 to Harald Skog. In December 1978 and January 1979 he twice fought Dennis Andries who was at a similar stage in his career, Andries winning both fights. In February 1980 he won his first title, taking the BBBofC Central Area light heavyweight title with a first round stoppage of Greg Evans. John Anthony Conteh, (born 27 May 1951) is a British former professional boxer who competed from 1971 to 1980. He held the WBC light-heavyweight title from 1974 to 1978, and regionally the European, British and Commonwealth titles between 1973 and 1974. As an amateur, he represented England and won a gold medal in the middleweight division at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games. Chic Calderwood (1 September 1937 – 12 November 1966) was a Scottish light-heavyweight boxer from Craigneuk in North Lanarkshire, Scotland who was active from 1957 to 1966. He was 6 ft. 3 in. tall and had a venomous punch, winning many of his fights by knockouts. His career was cut short when he was killed in an automobile accident. Amateur career He compiled an amateur boxing record of 64 wins and 6 defeats. Professional career He had his first professional fight in September 1957 when he fought Jimmy Teasdale in Falkirk, winning by a knockout in the second round. Ron Barton (25 February 1933 – 4 June 2018) was a British boxer who was British light-heavyweight champion in 1956 and also fought for the commonwealth title. Career Born in West Ham, London, Barton served in the Royal Air Force and worked at Smithfield Market, and was ABA middleweight champion as an amateur, also representing Britain at the 1953 European Boxing Championships in Warsaw.
