Richard Sykes (diplomat)
Sir Richard Adam Sykes, (8 May 1920 – 22 March 1979) was the British Ambassador to the Netherlands, who was assassinated by the IRA in The Hague in 1979. Early life Richard Sykes was born on 8 May 1920 to Brigadier A. C. Sykes. He was educated at Wellington College and Christ Church, University of Oxford. Second World War During the Second World War, Sykes served in the British Army with the Royal Signals from 1940 to 1946, attaining the rank of major. In 1945 he was awarded the Military Cross as well as the French Croix de Guerre. Diplomatic career Sykes joined HM Foreign Service in 1947 and served at the Foreign Office from 1947 to 1948. He then served in Nanking (1948–50), Peking (1950–52) and returned to the UK to serve at the Foreign Office (1952–56). Sir George Michael Edward Hollingbery (born 12 October 1963) is a British politician and diplomat who has served as the British Ambassador to Cuba since 2022. A member of the Conservative Party, he previously was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Meon Valley in Hampshire from 2010 to 2019. Antony Stokes
Nigel Antony David Stokes (born 21 January 1965) was British Ambassador to Cuba from 2016 to 2022. Stokes was educated at Queens' College, Cambridge and University College London (PhD, 1990). After working for Schlumberger and Mars, Incorporated he joined Her Majesty's Diplomatic Service in 1994. David Brighty CMG CVO (born 7 February 1939) is a retired British diplomat who was ambassador to several countries. Career Anthony David Brighty was educated at Northgate Grammar School (now Northgate High School (Ipswich)) and Clare College, Cambridge. He joined the Foreign Office in 1961, served in Brussels and Havana, then in 1969 resigned and spent two years working for S. G. Warburg & Co. He rejoined the Foreign Office in 1971 and served at Saigon and at the UK mission to the United Nations in New York, then attended the Royal College of Defence Studies in 1979. Andrew Palmer (diplomat)
Andrew Eustace Palmer, CMG, CVO (30 September 1937 - 13 November 2019) was a British diplomat, and Her Britannic Majesty's Ambassador to the Holy See 1991-1995. He was educated at Winchester College and the University of Cambridge. He also attended the Royal College of Defence Studies, and Harvard University. He was married to Davina (Barclay) from 1962. Palmer was Ambassador to Cuba 1986-1988, and Private Secretary to TRH The Duke and Duchess of Kent 1988-1990. He retired from the Diplomatic Service, which he joined in 1961, in 1995. He then held a number of positions at the University of Reading, where he was awarded the Degree of Hon D Litt in March 2016. He died on 13 November 2019 at the age of 82. Sir Patrick Robin Fearn KCMG (5 September 1934 – 26 August 2006) was a British diplomat who was ambassador to Cuba and Spain. Career Patrick Robin Fearn was educated at Ratcliffe College and University College, Oxford. Edward Jackson (diplomat)
Sir John Edward Jackson (24 June 1925 – 8 May 2002) was a British diplomat, ambassador to Cuba and Belgium. Born in London, Jackson was a scholar at Ardingly College and went on to study at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. He was later commissioned in the RNVR. Demobbed in 1946 in the rank of sub-lieutenant, Jackson joined the Foreign Office the following year. In 1956 Jackson was posted to Bonn to liaise between the Allied occupying forces and the embassy. From Bonn he was posted in 1960 to be consul at Guatemala City, a politically sensitive posting given Guatemala's longstanding claim to British Honduras (now Belize). In 1969 he then spent six months at the NATO Defence College in Rome before going to Berlin as political adviser and Head of Chancery at the British Military Government.
