List Of Women Artists Exhibited At The 1893 World's Columbian Exposition
Women artists competing for awards at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition submitted their work to juries at appropriate buildings. Women artists were represented in the Palace of Fine Arts, along with their fellow countrymen. Women exhibited painting and sculpture throughout the Fair. The Woman's Building did not have a juried exhibition, but lobbied to have artists of the day submit their work for the "Court of Honor". World's Columbian Exposition
The World's Columbian Exposition (also known as the Chicago World's Fair) was a world's fair held in Chicago in 1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492. The centerpiece of the Fair, held in Jackson Park, was a large water pool representing the voyage Columbus took to the New World. Chicago had won the right to host the fair over several other cities, including New York City, Washington, D.C., and St. Louis. The exposition was an influential social and cultural event and had a profound effect on American architecture, the arts, American industrial optimism, and Chicago's image. Emma De Vigne
Emma De Vigne (30 January 1850 - 3 June 1898) was a Belgian still life and portrait painter, who came from a family of artists from Ghent. Her paintings were exhibited in Europe, as well as in South America. Biography De Vigne was born on 30 January 1850 in Ghent. The family were all artists: her father, Pieter, and uncle, Felix, were sculptors, and she and her sisters, Louise and Malvina, were painters. It was her uncle, Félix De Vigne, taught her to paint; she later married his son, her cousin Jules De Vigne, who was a lawyer and a writer. During her lifetime De Vigne was known as a flower, and later portrait painter, who specialised in still life. Anna Petersen
Anna Sophie Lorenze Petersen (20 February 1845 – 6 October 1910) was a Danish painter. Although she showed some promise as an artist, specifically in genre painting, she struggled to find a place in the male-dominated Danish art world of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her work fell out of fashion and she was largely forgotten until the end of the 20th century when the Hirschsprung Collection and Statens Museum for Kunst acquired some of her more important works. Johanne Cathrine Krebs
Johanne Cathrine Krebs (21 April 1848 - 1 April 1924) was a Danish painter and women's rights activist. She was known for her portrait painting. She was active in establishing the women's department of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Biography Krebs was born in Byrum, Denmark . Her father was friends with the painters P. C. Skovgaard (1817–1875) and Johan Thomas Lundbye (1818-1848) sparking her interest in painting. She became a student of P.C. Skovgaard from 1869 and 1871. At that time she was unable to enroll in the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (''Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi''). Elise Konstantin-Hansen
Elise Konstantin-Hansen (1858–1946) was a Danish painter and ceramist. She developed her own naturalistic style, often painting sea birds, animals, plants and beach scenes. Early life and education Konstantin-Hansen was born in the Frederiksberg district of Copenhagen on 4 May 1858. She was the daughter of the Golden Age painter Carl Christian Constantin Hansen and his wife Magdelene Barbara Købke. She changed the spelling of her name to Konstantin-Hansen in 1908. Sophie Holten
Sophie Holten (1858–1930) was a Danish painter who created portraits, flower paintings and genre works. She is remembered in particular for her portraits of August Strindberg and L. A. Ring. She was also active in social work and feminism. Biography Born on 12 August 1858 in Skuldelev, Hornsherred, Sophie Holten was the daughter of the parish priest Hans Nicolai Holten (1829–71) and Marenstine Smith (1830-1913). She received private instruction in painting from Christen Dalsgaard in Sorø and later from Carl Thomsen in Copenhagen. From 1875 to 1876, she attended N. Zahle's School. Augusta Dohlmann
Augusta Dohlmann also known as ''Henriette Augusta Johanne Dohlmann'' (1847–1914) was a Danish painter. She was known for her flower painting. Biography Dohlmann was born in Frederiksberg on 9 May 1847. In 1878 she traveled to Paris to study French and painting. She returned to Denmark in 1880 when she exhibited at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition, where she would exhibit annually. Throughout her lifetime she would make several trips to Europe. Anna Ancher
Anna Ancher (18 August 1859 – 15 April 1935) was a Danish artist associated with the Skagen Painters, an artist colony on the northern point of Jylland, Denmark. She is considered to be one of Denmark's greatest visual artists. Background Anna Kirstine Brøndum was born in Skagen, Denmark, the daughter of Ane Hedvig Møller (1826–1916) and Erik Andersen Brøndum (1820–1890). She was the only one of the Skagen Painters who was born and grew up in Skagen, where her father owned the Brøndums Hotel. Gertrude Spurr Cutts
Gertrude Eleanor Spurr Cutts (1858–1941) was a Canadian artist. Career Born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England, Gertrude Spurr began her career as an artist in England, exhibiting her work with the Royal Society of British Artists and the Society of Women Artists. In 1890, Cutts emigrated to Canada, moving to Toronto, and opened an art studio. Cutts exhibited her work at the Palace of Fine Arts at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. In 1900, she studied at the Art Students League of New York with George Bridgman, Birge Harrison, and John F. Carlson. Mary Hiester Reid
Mary Augusta Hiester Reid (10 April 1854 – 4 October 1921) was an American-born Canadian painter and teacher. She was best known as a painter of floral still lifes, some of them called "devastatingly expressive" by a contemporary author, and by 1890 she was thought to be the most important flower painter in Canada. She also painted domesticated landscapes, night scenes, and, less frequently, studio interiors and figure studies. Her work as a painter is related in a broad sense to Tonalism and Aestheticism or "art for art's sake". Laura Muntz Lyall (June 18, 1860 – December 9, 1930) was a Canadian Impressionist painter, known for her sympathetic portrayal of women and children. Life and work Laura Adeline Muntz was born at Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England in 1860, but her family emigrated to Canada when she was a child. She grew up on a farm in the Muskoka District of Ontario. Emma May Martin
Emma May Martin (January 3, 1865 – February 10, 1957) was a Canadian artist best known for her work in watercolor, primarily depicting landscapes and still life scenes. Martin also occasionally worked in oil and china painting. Born in Toronto Ontario, Martin began her training with her father, Thomas Mower Martin. Martin later studied at the Toronto Art School under Marmaduke Matthews and George Reid. Martin began exhibiting in 1883, and would continue to show her work for the next sixty years.
