The following is a list of television Nielsen ratings and rankings for American daytime soap operas from 1950 to the present, as compiled by Nielsen Media Research. The numbers provided represent the percentage of TV households in the United States watching that particular show in a year. Ratings beginning with the 2013-14 television season count Live+Same Day households as opposed to Live+7 Days. Before 1996, the season average included only ratings from late September through mid-April. Nielsen Ratings
Nielsen Media Research (NMR) is an American firm that measures media audiences, including television, radio, theatre, films (via the AMC Theatres MAP program), and newspapers. Headquartered in New York City, it is best known for the Nielsen ratings, an audience measurement system of television viewership that for years has been the deciding factor in canceling or renewing television shows by television networks. As of May 2012, it is part of Nielsen Holdings. NMR began as a division of ACNielsen, a 1923-founded marketing research firm. In 1996, NMR was split off into an independent company, and in 1999, was purchased by the Dutch conglomerate VNU. In 2001, VNU also purchased ACNielsen, thereby bringing both companies under the same corporate umbrella. ''The Secret Storm'' is an American soap opera that the CBS television network transmitted from February 1, 1954, to February 8, 1974. It was created by Roy Winsor, who also created the long-running soap operas ''Search for Tomorrow'' and ''Love of Life''. Gloria Monty, of ''General Hospital'' fame, was a longtime director of the series. Like most CBS soap operas of the time, such as ''Guiding Light'' and ''As the World Turns'', ''The Secret Storm'' was broadcast live, and later taped, in New York at the CBS Broadcast Center on West 57th Street. ''Our Five Daughters'' is a daytime soap opera that ran on NBC from January 2 to September 28, 1962. The show was written by Leonard Stadd and directed by Paul Lammers, and aired for a half-hour, five days a week, at 3:30 PM EST, right after '' Young Doctor Malone''. ''Full Circle'' is an American soap opera that aired on CBS from June 27, 1960 to March 10, 1961. The half-hour series starred Robert Fortier, with Dyan Cannon, and Jean Byron as his romantic interests. It was the first American soap opera to be broadcast live-on-tape from Hollywood. Premise Gary Donovan is a drifter who wants to see new places and meet new people. Pre-show publicity said "the series will take him all over the United States." ''The Clear Horizon'' is an American soap opera which ran on CBS Daytime from July 11, 1960 to March 10, 1961 and February 26 to June 15, 1962. Manya Starr created the program and was its head writer. Premise ''The Clear Horizon'' (titled ''The Army Wife'' in the pre-production phase) revolved around the problems of astronauts and their wives at Cape Canaveral, Florida. In the show's first episode, Roy Selby ( Ed Kemmer) was moved from his post in Alaska to The Pentagon, which gave him a new commission in Florida. ''Young Doctor Malone'' (a.k.a. ''Young Dr. Malone'') is an American soap opera, created by Irna Phillips, which had a long run on radio and television from 1939 to 1963. The producer was Betty Corday (1912–1987), who also produced '' Pepper Young's Family'' and later was a co-creator with husband Ted Corday of NBC Daytime's '' Days of Our Lives''. Sponsored by General Foods and Post Cereals, the radio serial began on the Blue Network on November 20, 1939. The 15-minute program aired daily at 11:15am, continuing until April 26, 1940.
