Provigo is a grocery retailer based in Quebec, Canada, consisting of over 300 stores and franchises throughout the province. It operates a retailing chain of stores and distribution warehouses. It is owned by Loblaw Companies Limited. The chain's advertising slogan is "Si vite, si bon!" ("So quick, so good!") History In 1969, in response to Canadian and American competition, a consortium of four Quebec wholesalers merged their activities with the intent to save costs and establish services as a big company. Super C is a Quebec discount supermarket chain with 98 stores in Quebec. The stores average in size. Super C offers 8,000 products including some 1,200 products from the Super C private label brand. Super C traces its origins as La Ferme Carnaval founded on September 15, 1982 which opened a supermarket under the trade name Super Carnaval on January 12, 1983 in Beauport, Quebec. The company was acquired by Metro-Richelieu on June 1, 1987 from Toronto-based Burnac Corporation. In 1991, the 14 Super Carnaval outlets were converted in phases to the new banner Super C with the last stores renamed by May 1992. Food Basics Ltd. is a Canadian supermarket chain owned by Metro Inc. The company operates over 130 stores throughout Ontario. History Food Basics was created by A&P Canada to compete with the successful No Frills warehouse-style supermarket operated by Loblaw Companies. It became part of the Metro group when A&P Canada was sold to Metro for $1.7 billion in 2005. Food Basics lowers its prices in a number of ways: low maintenance (no free plastic bags, just free cardboard boxes), store decor is kept to a minimum, and fewer staff are employed, mostly in part-time positions. The chain operates by pushing higher volumes on a limited selection of products than Metro stores, allowing it to compete price-wise with other grocery stores. Zehrmart Inc. (doing business as Zehrs Markets or simply Zehrs ), is a Canadian supermarket chain in southern Ontario. The chain has 43 locations and is a part of Loblaw Companies Limited which purchased the Zehrs chain in the mid-1970s. History The first store was established by Emory Zehr and his sons in Kitchener in 1950 and was focused mainly on food. Some of the earliest locations were on Lancaster Street, Belmont Avenue and Highland Road in Kitchener. Your Independent Grocer (YIG), known colloquially as "Independent" or "Yours" is a supermarket chain in Canada with more than 100 locations. It has stores in every province and territory except Manitoba, Nunavut, and Quebec. It is a unit of National Grocers, itself a unit of Loblaw Companies Limited. Stores are typically operated by a Franchising, franchise owner. Many of the stores were originally Ottawa-area outlets of the defunct Quebec-based Steinberg's (supermarket), Steinberg's grocery chain.
