Premier Of Victoria
The premier of Victoria is the head of government in the Australian state of Victoria. The premier is appointed by the governor of Victoria, and is the leader of the political party able to secure a majority in the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Responsible government came to the colony of Victoria in 1855. Between 1856 and 1892, the head of the government was commonly called the premier or the prime minister, but neither title had any legal basis. The head of government always held another portfolio, usually Chief Secretary or Treasurer, for which they were paid a salary. The first head of government to hold the title of premier without holding another portfolio was William Shiels in 1892. Premiers of Victoria who have served for more than 3,000 days have a statue installed at Treasury Place. The Electoral district of Warrnambool was an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Between 1955 and 1967 the district was abolished and distributed between the Electoral district of Portland, Electoral district of Hampden and the Electoral district of Polwarth. Electoral District Of Mornington
The electoral district of Mornington is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. The electorate can be described as outer metropolitan and rural, including animal farming, grape production and wineries. The district is 155 square kilometres in area. It was first created in 1859 when the Electoral district of Evelyn and Mornington was abolished and split in two. The district of Mornington initially included the entire Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island and French Island. Currently it includes Mornington, Mount Eliza, Mount Martha and Tuerong, and parts of Baxter and Moorooduc. Mornington has been held by the Liberal Party since it was re-created in 1985. James McCulloch
Sir James McCulloch, (18 March 1819 – 31 January 1893), British colonial politician, was the fifth Premier of Victoria. Early life McCulloch was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was the son of George McCulloch, a quarry master and contractor, and Jane Thomson, a farmer's daughter. He had only a primary education and as a young man worked in shops, eventually becoming a junior partner in a softgoods firm. On 11 May 1853 McCulloch arrived in Melbourne aboard the ''Adelaide'' ( John Everard being a fellow passenger) to manage the mercantile firm of Dennistoun Brothers in Melbourne. Following closure of the Dennistoun office in 1861, James McCulloch started his own business McCulloch, Sellar and Company in partnership with fellow Scot Robert Sellar. 1943 Victorian State Election
The 1943 Victorian state election was held in the Australian state of Victoria on Saturday 12 June 1943 to elect 65 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. Background Country Party unity At the time of the election, the Country Party was in the process of repairing a split which had taken place in December 1937 after federal MP John McEwen was expelled from the state branch of the party. The splinter group which supported McEwen had formed the Liberal Country Party on 30 March 1938, which contested the 1940 state election as a separate party. By April 1943, the United Country Party and the Liberal Country Party had formed a joint executive, which had unanimously agreed to reunite the parties. Members of the LCP at the time of the election were endorsed and counted as Victorian Country Party candidates separately from the United Country Party, but the unity agreements meant that their seats were counted for Dunstan's UCP. 1940 Victorian State Election
The 1940 Victorian state election was held in the Australian state of Victoria on Saturday 16 March 1940 to elect 44 of the 65 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. Background Several events had taken place since the previous state election on 2 October 1937, which had changed the breakdown of the parties in the Assembly: * In November 1937, Ian Macfarlan (the member for Brighton) left the United Australia Party (UAP) and sat as an Independent. Macfarlan gave two reasons for his resignation from the UAP: that the party was sitting in opposition to the Dunstan Country government which he praised; and that it was controlled by a central body outside of the parliament, the members of which were unknown to most party members. Frederick Holden (Grant) also left the UAP and sat on the cross benches. Albert Dunstan (cropped)
Sir Albert Arthur Dunstan, KCMG (26 July 1882 – 14 April 1950) was an Australian politician. A member of the Country Party (now National Party), Dunstan was the 33rd premier of Victoria. His term as premier was the second-longest in the state's history, behind Sir Henry Bolte. Dunstan, who was premier from 2 April 1935 to 14 September 1943, and again from 18 September 1943 to 2 October 1945, was the first premier of Victoria to hold that office as a position in its own right, and not just an additional duty taken up by the Treasurer, Attorney-General or Chief Secretary. Early life Dunstan was born on 26 July 1882 at Donald East, Victoria, the son of a Cornish gold rush immigrant.
