Its common names include hottentot-fig, sour fig, ice plant or highway ice plant. Description ''Carpobrotus edulis'' is a creeping, mat-forming succulent species. It grows year round, with individual shoot segments growing more than 1 m (3 ft) per year. It can grow to at least 50 m (165 ft) in diameter. The leaves are a dull-green or yellow-green colour. Delosperma
''Delosperma'' ('delos'=evident, 'sperma'=seed) is a genus of around 170 species of succulent plants, formerly included in ''Mesembryanthemum'' in the family Aizoaceae. It was defined by English botanist N. E. Brown in 1925. The genus is common in southern and eastern Africa, with a few species in Madagascar, Reunion island, Yemen and Saudi Arabia. ''Delosperma'' species, as do most Aizoaceae, have hygrochastic capsules, opening and closing as they wet and dry. Distinguishing characters Plants of the genus ''Delosperma'' can be distinguished by their seed capsules. When these open (in response to rain), the seeds are exposed and not covered by a protective membrane, like those of most other plants in the family. The membrane is sometimes reduced to just a ledge (a feature shared by the related genus '' Trichodiadema''. The triangular valves, which open outwards when wet, each have distinctive wings on either side. ''Delosperma'' leaves tend to grooved or covered in bladder cell ...

Cheiridopsis
''Cheiridopsis'' is a genus that consists of 100 species of flowering succulent perennial plants, native to semi-arid regions in the far west of Namibia and South Africa. Description Most species are clump-forming, a few are shrubby. The leaves are opposite and triangular in section, rarely flattened, the surface more or less velvety, which makes them easy to distinguish from species of the allied genus '' Argyroderma''. Daisy-like flowers open during the day in summer, are borne singly and usually have yellow, rarely purple or red, petals. The name comes from the Greek ''"cheiris"'', meaning "sleeve". Each succeeding pair of leaves differs from the previous one in form, size, and relative unity of the leaves. Those most united wither in the resting period and form a papery sheath covering the succeeding pair of leaves during dormancy in dry, hot summer. Distribution The genus occurs in the far west of South Africa and Namibia. Here it occurs from the Western Cape Province n ...
