Rowing (sport)
Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oars—one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain, called eights. There are a wide variety of course types and formats of racing, but most elite and championship level racing is conducted on calm water courses long with several lanes marked using buoys. Michelle Guerette (born October 6, 1980) is an American rower who competed in the Women's Quadruple Sculls event at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. In the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Guerette earned a Silver Medal in Women's Single Sculls, finishing less than half a second behind the winner, Rumyana Neykova. After competing in the 2004 Olympics, she embarked on a solo career, and was the first pick for the U.S. team at the 2005 World Rowing Championships in Gifu, Japan, at which she placed third in the women's single sculls. Rowing at the 2004 Summer Olympics took place at the Schinias Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Centre and featured 550 competitors taking part in 14 events. The medals were split among 22 countries, Romania topping the medal table, their women winning 3 golds, with the traditionally strong Germany, Great Britain and Australia picking up four medals in total. Romania's Elisabeta Lipă won her fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal and fifth overall. Lipă, who was part of Romania's women's eight, won her first in Los Angeles in 1984 followed by gold medals in 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004, a record span of 20 years between her first and last gold medal. Rumyana Neykova ( bg, Румяна Нейкова; born 6 April 1973 in Sofia) is a Bulgarian rower. Neykova competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics, the 1996 Summer Olympics, the 2000 Summer Olympics, where she won silver in Single Sculls, the 2004 Summer Olympics, where she won bronze and the 2008 Summer Olympics, where she won gold in the same discipline. Her current coach is her husband Svilen Neykov. In 2002, she set the world best time of 7:07:41 on 21 September in Seville ESP and she was named Bulgarian Sportswoman of the Year, as well as FISA Female Rower of the Year. Neykova has been involved in rowing since 1985, when she began training at CSKA Sofia coached Verka Aleksieva. In 1989, she was vice-world junior champion, winning that title in 1990. Trine Hansen (born 19 February 1973 in Ringsted, Sjælland) is a retired female rower from Denmark. Hansen mainly competed in the single scull boat type, and she won the World Rowing Championship in 1994 and a Bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in single sculls. Trine Hansen grew up in Sorø and was affiliated with ''Sorø Roklub'' until 1997 where she moved to ''Roforeningen Kvik''. Silken Suzette Laumann, (born November 14, 1964) is a Canadians, Canadian champion rowing (sport), rower. Life and career Laumann was born in Toronto Township, Ontario, Toronto Township, Ontario, now Mississauga. Starting in 1976, Laumann won a number of awards, including a gold medal in quadruple sculls at the U.S. Championships, two gold medals in single sculls at the Pan American Games, a bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics, 1984 Olympics in the double sculls with her sister Daniele.
