1969 Ghanaian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Ghana on 29 August 1969, the first since the 1966 coup by the National Liberation Council which toppled the Nkrumah government. Voters elected the new 140-seat Parliament. Kofi Abrefa Busia, the leader of the Progress Party (which won 105 of the 140 seats) Dieter Nohlen, Michael Krennerich & Bernhard Thibaut (1999) ''Elections in Africa: A data handbook'', p435 became Prime Minister. There were no presidential elections, as the system adopted was a parliamentary republic. Instead, a ceremonial president, Edward Akufo-Addo, was elected by an electoral college. Early life and education Ohene was born on 24 August 1932 at Manso Mem, a town in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Hanson Matthew (24 July 1925 – 8 October 2000) is a Ghanaian politician and a member of the 1st parliament of the 2nd republic of Ghana, representing Ahafo Ano Constituency as a member of the Progress Party. Early life and education He was born on 24 July 1925 at Asokore in the Eastern Region of Ghana (then Gold Coast). He has also served as Attorney General and Justice minister as well as foreign minister on two occasions. He was the Leader of the Opposition in the Third Republic from 1979 to 1981. Early life Owusu was born on 26 December 1923 in Agona, Ashanti Region. Owusu was an economist who later trained as a lawyer. He was a prominent member of the National Liberation Movement which stood for the 1956 elections in the Gold Coast prior to elections. During the First Republic, he was detained under the Preventive Detention Act (1958) by the Kwame Nkrumah government. Akenten Appiah-Menka was a Ghanaian lawyer, politician and businessman. He was the deputy minister for trade and industry and later deputy attorney general in the second republic. Early life and education Appiah-Menka was born on 3 July 1933 at Aboabogya, a town in the Kwabre district near Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to Eno Akosua (his mother) and Opanin Amponsah Adiyia (his father) who died when he was a few months old in his mother's womb. He had his middle school education at Aboabogya Methodist School. He proceeded to Abuakwa State College, Kibi for his cambridge certificate and Adisadel College for his advanced level certificate.
