List Of MLAs Elected In The 1954 Gold Coast Legislative Election
This is a list of people elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Gold Coast on 15 June 1954. Unlike the previous Legislative Assembly, all members were elected directly by the general population. The membership was also increased to 104. Composition List of MPs elected in the general election The following table is a list of MPs elected in the Gold Coast 1954 election. Some notable politicians lost their seats in this election. These include four members of The Big Six. The first was Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey who lost out to Kwame Nkrumah in Accra Central. The next was J. B. Danquah, a founding member of the United Gold Coast Convention and now a member of the Ghana Congress Party who lost to a relative, Aaron Ofori-Atta. Gold Coast (British Colony)
The Gold Coast was a British Crown colony on the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa from 1821 until its independence in 1957 as Ghana. The term Gold Coast is also often used to describe all of the four separate jurisdictions that were under the administration of the Governor of the Gold Coast. These were the Gold Coast itself, Ashanti, the Northern Territories Protectorate and the British Togoland trust territory. The first European explorers To arrive at the coast were the Portuguese in 1471. They encountered a variety of African kingdoms, some of which controlled substantial deposits of gold in the soil. Kwame Sanaa-Poku Jantuah
Kwame Sanaa-Poku Jantuah (21 December 1922 – 3 February 2011), originally known as John Ernest Kwame Antoa Onyina Jantuah, was a Ghanaian politician, lawyer and diplomat. He was the last survivor from the first all-African cabinet set up by Kwame Nkrumah in the Gold Coast prior to independence. Early life and education Jantuah was born on 21 December 1922 at Kejetia, a suburb of Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region of what was then the Gold Coast (present-day Ghana). He was baptised on 19 May 1934 and he was given the Christian names John and Ernest at the St. Peter's Catholic Church in Kumasi. In 1936, Jantuah went to St. Theresa's Junior Seminary at Amissano, near Elmina, for training. He attended St. Augustine's College from 1943 to 1944. Stephen Willie Yeboah
Stephen Willie Yeboah (born 26 October 1928) was a Ghanaian politician. He served as a regional commissioner for the Brong Ahafo Region, the Ashanti Region and the Western Region. He also served as a member of parliament for the Sunyani West constituency and later the Dormaa constituency. Early life and education Yeboah was born on 26 October 1928 at Dormaa Akwamu, Brong Ahafo Region. He had his elementary education in Dormaa Ahenkro in the Brong Ahafo Region and Bekwai in the Ashanti Region. After receiving his standard 7 certificate he continued at the Elthanus Commercial Academy in Saltpond. There, he studied shorthand, typing, book-keeping and accountancy for a period of two years. Boahene Yeboah-Afari
Kwame Boahene Yeboah-Afari (13 November 1920 – 22 May 1996) was an educator and a politician. He served in various ministerial portfolios of the first republic including serving as Ghana's first Minister for Agriculture and the first Regional Minister for the Brong Ahafo Region. He also served as a member of parliament for the Sunyani East constituency. Early life and education Yeboah-Afari was born on 13 November 1920 to Nana Yeboah-Afari II son of a royal of the Dormaa Stool. He had his secondary education at Abuakwa State College completing in 1947. Krobo Edusei
Krobo Edusei (26 December 1914 – 13 February 1984) was a Ghanaian politician and a high-profile member of Kwame Nkrumah's government. He was a popular, outspoken and prominent Ashanti activist and at the forefront of the Ghanaian independence movement, galvanising support amongst the Ashantis for Nkrumah's independence movement. He served as Minister without Portfolio, Minister for Agriculture, Minister for Transport and Communication and Minister for the Interior under Nkrumah. Robert Okyere Amoako-Atta
Robert Okyere Amoako-Atta was a Ghanaian politician. During the first republic, he served as the Regional Commissioner (Regional Minister) for the Ashanti Region on three occasions. He also served as the Minister of Labour and Co-operative from 1960 to 1961 and the Regional Commissioner for the Brong Ahafo Region from 1963 to 1965. In 1954, he became the member of parliament representing the Obuasi constituency. He served in that capacity until February 1966 when the Nkrumah government was overthrown. Obuasi (Ghana Parliament Constituency)
The Obuasi Constituency was a constituency in the Obuasi Municipal District in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. In 2003, the Electoral Commission of Ghana, created 30 new constituencies in the country by dividing certain already existing ones. With the Obuasi constituency, it was split into the Obuasi and Akrofuom with Obuasi and Akrofuom as their headquarters. The Obuasi constituency was further split in 2011 into the Obuasi West and Obuasi East constituencies. Edward Asafu-Adjaye
Sir Edward Okyere Asafu-Adjaye (1903–1976) was a Ghanaian political figure, lawyer and diplomat. He was the first Ashanti lawyer and Ghana's first High Commissioner in Britain with accreditation to France concurrently. Early life and education He was born on 14 July 1903 at Calabar, Nigeria, where his father was working as popular trader. After exhausting his business activity at Calabar, his father; Opanyin Asafu Adjaye brought him to Kumasi where he started his education at Kumasi Government Boys School.
