Edna Deakin
Edna Deakin (1871–1946) was an American designer, and one of the earliest women architects in the United States of America. She is best known for remodeling the " Temple of the Wings" building in Berkeley, California. Life Edna Deakin was born in the area of San Francisco, California. She was the daughter of the British-American painter Edwin Deakin and the niece of the architect Frederick H. Daken. She studied mechanics at the University of California, Berkeley, but dropped out to study architecture with her cousin Clarence Dakin (whose family spelled the name differently) at the classes of John Galen Howard. Architectural work After her studies, Deakin worked in the offices of Dickey and Reed (C. W. Dickey) and for the architect George T. Plowman. Julia Morgan
Julia Morgan (January 20, 1872 – February 2, 1957) was an American architect and engineer. Roslyn Lindheim
Roslyn Lindheim (1921 – May 5, 1987) was an American architect and a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who was best known for designing hospitals. Life and career Lindheim was born in New York City and attended Radcliffe College followed by Columbia University School of Architecture. She moved to California in the 1950s, splitting her work between California and New York. She joined the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley, in 1963, where she advocated for the admission of black and Hispanic students to the Department of Architecture. Lindheim specialized in healthcare architecture, and aimed to create "healthy and humane" environments when designing healthcare facilities. She was heavily involved with the non-profit organization Planetree, which promotes patient-centered care, and developed a set of design principles that were used at all Planetree facilities. Michelle Kaufmann
Michelle Kaufmann is an American architect and designer. In 2002, Kaufmann founded Michelle Kaufmann Designs, which designed and built single-family and multi-family green homes using prefabricated modular technology. The firm was closed in May 2009 and Kaufmann started a new design firm, Michelle Kaufmann Studio. Kaufmann is also a co-founder of Flux.io, a company developing collaborative design software for the building design and construction industry. Personal life Kaufmann grew up in Iowa and received her undergraduate degree from Iowa State University and her Masters from Princeton University. Grace Jewett
Grace Jewett (1876-1946) was an American architect in the early 20th century. She was one of the pioneer women in architecture, and successfully developed her career in San Francisco after the devastation caused by the earthquake and fire in 1906. Jewett studied at the Pratt Institute in New York from 1900-1902, and her career spanned from 1902-1943.She is most well known for her success in designing apartment buildings, but she also worked on various industrial facilities. In 1913, Jewett opened her own practice in downtown San Francisco. She also often collaborated with Italian architect Italo Zanolini. Some of Jewett's most significant industrial designs include a factory for American Machine Works, a warehouse on 8th street, and a garage on Bush street. She is also known for her design of the Women's Club of San Mateo in the early 1920s. Helen Douglass French (1900–1994) was an American architect. She worked together and independently with her husband, landscape architect Prentiss French.
