Lionel Deane
Lionel D. Deane (1861 - 1938) was an architect in the United States and later part of Brooklyn, New York's art scene. He was born in Nova Scotia, Canada. He is known for his architectural work in northern California and the Pacific Northwest. His career took a hit when he was caught up in a crackdown against Portland's Gay community in 1912 (Portland vice scandal). Deane was born in Nova Scotia, Canada in 1861. Portland Vice Scandal
The Portland vice scandal (sometimes called the vice clique scandal, the vice crusade in contemporary reports, or inaccurately the YMCA scandal) refers to the discovery in November 1912 of a gay male subculture in the U.S. city of Portland, Oregon. Nearly 70 men were charged, and three were convicted by jury; the Oregon Supreme Court then reversed the convictions on legal technicalities. Beginnings At the time the scandal broke, Oregon's sodomy law merely said, "If any person shall commit sodomy or the crime against nature, either with mankind or beast, such person, upon conviction thereof shall be punished by imprisonment in the penitentiary not less than one year nor more than five years." Justus Krumbein
Justus F. Krumbein (1847November 1907) was an architect based in Portland, Oregon, United States, whose work included Richardsonian Romanesque designs and Italianate, cast-iron architecture. Little of his work survived the 20th Century. Early life and education Krumbein was born in 1847 near Hamburg, Germany. At the age of 15, he became a student of architecture at the Hannover Polytechnic School, and he graduated with honors in 1867. He returned to Hamburg and worked as an architectural drafter for two years, then in 1869 he immigrated to the United States under the name Fritz Krumbein. Career Krumbein arrived in San Francisco on July 9, 1869, and he worked in architectural firms until 1871. In that year he moved to Portland and formed a partnership with contractor Elwood M. Burton.
