''Linux Magazine'' is an international magazine for Linux software enthusiasts and professionals. It is published by the former Linux New Media division of the German media company Medialinx AG. The magazine was first published in German in 1994, and later in English, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Spanish. The German edition is called ''Linux-Magazin'' (); the American/Canadian edition is ''Linux Pro Magazine'' (). The founding company was Articon GmbH. The magazine is published on the first Thursday of each month. Every issue includes a DVD-ROM, usually featuring a recent version of a Linux distribution. Linux ( or ) is a family of open-source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991, by Linus Torvalds. ''Linux Format'' is the UK's first Linux-specific magazine, and as of 2013 was the best-selling Linux title in the UK. It is also exported to many countries worldwide. It is published by Future plc (which produces a number of other computer magazines). ''Linux Format'' is commonly abbreviated to LXF, and issues are referred to with LXF as a prefix followed by the issue number (for example, LXF102 refers to the 102nd issue). ''Linux Voice'' was a Linux and open source magazine (print and digital) which began publication in the UK in April 2014. It was sold on news-stands around the world. History The magazine started as a result of a successful Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign in late 2013, which raised over £120,000. The editorial staff of the magazine came entirely from the UK magazine ''Linux Format''. They resigned to pursue a different agenda in magazine/online publishing. Editorial Director Andrew Gregory claimed the magazine would return a portion of profits to "the community that we serve". The magazine shared 50% of its yearly profits with reader-voted FOSS projects. The profits were split between 'software' and 'projects and distros' with the top 3 winners in each category receiving a part of the total funds. Computec Media GmbH is a German computer media company headquartered in Fürth. It is a subsidiary of the Swiss Marquard Media Group. The company publishes multiple magazines and websites related to computers, video gaming and media. History Computec Media was founded in 1989 by Christian Geltenpoth who led the company until 2005. In 1999, the company tried to establish itself in the United States but had to cancel its operations after only ten months. From 1998 to 2013, it was traded in the General Standard of the Frankfurt stock exchange.
