Linge
The Linge is a river in the Betuwe that is 99.8 km long, which makes it one of the longest rivers that flow entirely within the Netherlands. It starts near the village Doornenburg near the German border. A legend tells us that if there will be no more pigs grazing at the castle of Doornenburg, the river will dry out. The Linge flows to Zoelen, a small village north of Tiel and from there on meanders through the Betuwe, to end in the Boven Merwede near Gorinchem. Until Geldermalsen the river is little more than a small, canalised stream. From Geldermalsen on however, it begins to look like a real river complete with dikes and small floodplains. The Linge provides idyllic spots at old towns like Asperen and Leerdam as both have the city walls still in shape at the side of the river. Doornenburg
Doornenburg is a village to the south east of Angeren in the municipality of Lingewaard, Gelderland, the Netherlands. Doornenburg Castle is located near the village. History The village was first mentioned in the 9th century as Doronburc, and means fortified place and either thorns or the Doro (person)". Doornenburg developed on a ridge in the Early Middle Ages. Doornenburg Castle started in the 14th century as a castle in front of a large square. During the 15th and 16th century, the square was aligned with buildings. The outer bailey was constructed in the 15th century and is the largest of the Netherlands. The castle and its buildings were restored between 1937 and 1941 and returned to their medieval form. In 1945, it was severely damaged and restored between 1947 and 1968. In 1742, a fort was built on the Pannerdens Kanaal, however only fragments remain. Asperen
Asperen is a small city in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of West Betuwe, and lies about 10 km (6 miles) east of Gorinchem on the river Linge. It received city rights in 1313. History In Roman times Asperen was the location of the Roman settlement Caspingium. The name Asperen was first used in 893. The etymology is unknown. Asperen was an ''esdorp'' which developed in the Early Middle Ages along the Linge River. It received city rights in 1313, and city walls and a circular canal around the city were constructed, however the city never developed. Part of the city wall and the Waterpoort, a city gate, have remained. Asperen Castle was destroyed by the French in 1672. The Dutch Reformed church was built in the 15th century. Geldermalsen
Geldermalsen () is a town and former municipality in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands. Town of Geldermalsen The town centre of Geldermalsen contains a two-aisled Gothic church dating from the 15th century, with a Romanesque tower dating from the 13th century. The town contains two windmills: De Watermolen, which was built in 1772, and De Bouwing, which was built in 1848. Located in the east side there is a graveyard. Overbetuwe
Overbetuwe () is a municipality in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands. It was formed on 1 January 2001 as a merger of three former municipalities: Elst, Heteren and Valburg. Overbetuwe is bordered in the north by the river Rhine and in the south by the river Waal. The city hall is located in Elst, the largest town in the municipality. Betuwe
Batavia (; , ) is a historical and geographical region in the Netherlands, forming large fertile islands in the river delta formed by the waters of the Rhine (Dutch: ''Rijn'') and Meuse (Dutch: ''Maas'') rivers. During the Roman empire, it was an important frontier region and source of imperial soldiers. Its name is possibly pre-Roman. Leerdam
Leerdam () is a city and former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht. The municipality was merged with the municipalities of Vianen and Zederik on 1 January 2019. The name of the new municipality is Vijfheerenlanden which is a part of the province Utrecht. The former municipality Leerdam was a part of the province South Holland. A15 Motorway (Netherlands)
The Dutch A15 motorway (Rijksweg 15) is a set of two motorways in the Netherlands, the A15 and the A18. Connection between A15 and A18 In governmental plans, the A15 and A18 together were meant to be one long motorway from the Europoort harbor near Rotterdam towards the town of Varsseveld in the east of the country. However, the section between the interchange Ressen and Zevenaar was not completed. To avoid confusion for drivers, the eastern part of the road has been given a different number: A18. In 2018, the Dutch government announced plans to extend the A15 by from the A325 south of Arnhem to the A12 northwest of Zevenaar as a toll motorway, which will provide a connection onward to the A18; the A12 will also be widened from Westervoort to the Oud-Dijk interchange with the A18, and a new Zevenaar-East exit will be built to replace the existing Zevenaar exit. Beesd is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of West Betuwe, and lies about 16 km west of Tiel. It is situated near the river Linge and has a railway station on the railway from Dordrecht to Geldermalsen. History Beesd was first mentioned in 1224 as "in Beseth". The etymology is unclear. Beesd was founded in the Early Middle Ages on a stream ridge. It developed into a stretched out ''esdorp''. The Dutch Reformed church is an aisleless church with detached tower. The lower part of tower dates from around 1500. The current church is the result of an extensive modification and rebuilding in 1825. Beesd was home to 1,282 people in 1840. Tiel
Tiel () is a municipality and a town in the middle of the Netherlands. The town is enclosed by the Waal river and the Linge river to the South and the North, and the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal to the East. Tiel comprises the population centres Kapel-Avezaath, Tiel and Wadenoijen. The city was founded in the 5th century CE.
