Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union
Lincolnshire Naturalist's Union (LNU) is an association of amateur naturalists covering a wide range of natural history subjects. It was founded in 1893 and aims to promote the investigation of the fauna, flora, and physical features of the county of Lincolnshire and to promote the study of natural history. History The society was formed on 12 June 1893 during a meeting held in Mablethorpe. The meeting came about from conversations held by William F. Baker and Joseph Coe with "prominent naturalists connectected with Lincolnshire". About 30 naturalists met at Mablethrope, travelled to Theddlethorpe and then returned to the Book-in-Hand hotel at Mablethorpe to discuss the formation of a union. A subsequent meeting was held on 1 July 1893 at Lincoln to elect officers to organise the union. Lincolnshire (abbreviated Lincs.) is a county in the East Midlands of England, with a long coastline on the North Sea to the east. John Cordeaux (ornithologist)
John Cordeaux , (27 February 1831, Foston, Leicestershire – 1 August 1899, Great Coates House) was one of the foremost English amateur naturalist and ornithologist of his day, known for his work with the British Association on bird migration. Biography Cordeaux was the son of Rev. John Cordeaux, rector of Hooton Roberts, Yorkshire, and Elizabeth, daughter of Christopher Taylor, of Tothill, Lincolnshire. On his mother's side he descended from Edward I. Cordeaux lived at Great Coates House, near Grimsby, and was a justice of the peace. In 1860, he married Mary Ann (d. 1922), daughter of William Wilson, MD. They had two sons; the younger, Colonel Edward Kyme Cordeaux, was father of the Conservative politician John Cordeaux. In 1893 Cordeaux became the first president of the Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union. The Collection (Lincolnshire)
The Collection is the county museum and gallery for Lincolnshire in England. It is an amalgamation of the Usher Gallery and the City and County Museum. The museum part of the enterprise is housed in a new, purpose-built building close by the Usher Gallery in the city of Lincoln. History The Collection has existed since 2005. It is a merger between the Usher Gallery, that was established in 1927, and the City and County Museum, that was founded in 1906. The first curator of the Lincoln City and County Museum was Arthur Smith (1869–1947), who was born in Leicester and raised in Grimsby and who was interested in natural history. After being appointed curator, he moved to Lincoln. He became the (honorary) secretary of the Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union (LNU), and acquired important collections, for example from J.E.
