Lincoln Theatre (Miami Beach, Florida)
The Lincoln Theatre on Lincoln Road in the South Beach neighborhood of Miami Beach, Florida was a movie theater and later a concert hall. It was designed in art deco style by noted cinema and theater designer Thomas W. Lamb and opened in 1936. It functioned as a cinema until the 1980s, then sat vacant for several years, then was used for performances of the New World Symphony, which bought it in 1990. The symphony carried out a multimillion-dollar renovation. The symphony moved to the new and much larger Frank Gehry-designed New World Center in 2011, and already before that in February 2010, Clifford Stein purchased the building to turn into retail shops. South Beach
South Beach, also nicknamed colloquially as SoBe, is a neighborhood in Miami Beach, Florida. It is located east of Miami between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The area encompasses Miami Beach south of Dade Boulevard. This area was the first section of Miami Beach to be developed, starting in the 1910s, due to the development efforts of Carl G. Fisher, the Lummus Brothers, and John S. Collins, the latter of whose construction of the Collins Bridge provided the first vital land link between mainland Miami and the beaches. The New World Symphony is an American orchestral academy based in Miami Beach, Florida. Established in 1987, the organization is a training ensemble for young musicians in preparation for professional careers in classical music. Since 2011, the New World Symphony has its headquarters in the New World Center. History In 1987, Michael Tilson Thomas established the New World Symphony, with initial financial assistance from Ted Arison, the founder of Carnival Cruise Lines. Thomas and Arison had similar visions of a training orchestra for young conservatory graduates to assist them in finding employment with professional orchestras. New World Center
The New World Center is a concert hall in the South Beach section of Miami Beach, Florida, designed by Frank Gehry. It is the home of the New World Symphony, with a capacity of 756 seats. It opened in January 2011. Located one block north of Lincoln Road in the South Beach stretch of Miami Beach, the building also features a new 2.5-acre public park next to it, designed by the firm West 8 (after Gehry relinquished the job following a budget reduction). A half acre of that is the SoundScape area, which allows outside visitors to experience live, free "wallcasts" of select events throughout the season through the use of visual and audio technology on a projection wall. Such wallcasts are planned to occur at least twice a month. A sound system incorporating 155 individually tuned speakers augments the high-definition video presentation.
