Lilli Wislicenus
Lilli Wislicenus, born Elisabeth Emma Charlotte Finzelberg (1872–1939) was a German sculptor. Biography Wislicenus née Finzelberg was born in 1872 in Andernach. For a time she lived with her uncle, the painter Hermann Wislicenus in Duesseldorf. She attended the Königlich Technische Hochschule Charlottenburg (Technical University of Berlin). She exhibited her work at the Woman's Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. In 1896 she married her cousin, the German painter (1864–1939). Andernach () is a town in the district of Mayen-Koblenz, in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, of about 30,000 inhabitants. Hermann Wislicenus
Hermann Wislicenus (20 September 1825 – 25 April 1899) was a German historical painter. He is chiefly known for his mural paintings in the Imperial Palace of Goslar. Biography Born in Eisenach in the Thuringian Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, Wislicenus studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts and later became a student of Eduard Bendemann and Julius Schnorr. His first art work, “Abundance and Destitution,” was purchased by the Dresden Gallery in 1853. A stipend from the Grand Duke of Weimar enabled him to study in Italy (1853–1857) where he lived in Rome and became a follower of Peter von Cornelius and the Nazarene movement. Upon his return to Germany, he settled in Weimar and opened his own studio. In Spring 1868, he was appointed professor at the Düsseldorf Academy. In 1872 several of his works perished in a devastating fire and were re-created by Wislicenus in the following years. Women artists competing for awards at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition submitted their work to juries at appropriate buildings. Women artists were represented in the Palace of Fine Arts, along with their fellow countrymen. Women exhibited painting and sculpture throughout the Fair. The Woman's Building did not have a juried exhibition, but lobbied to have artists of the day submit their work for the "Court of Honor". The Woman's Building (Chicago)
The Woman's Building was designed and built for the World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893 under the auspices of the Board of Lady Managers. Of the twelve main buildings for the Exhibition, on June 30, 1892 The Woman's Building was the first to be completed. It had exhibition space as well as an assembly room, a library, and a Hall of Honor. The ''History of the World's Fair'' states, "It will be a long time before such an aggregation of woman's work, as may now be seen in the Woman's Building, can be gathered from all parts of the world again." Building Fourteen women architects submitted designs for the Woman's Building. The Board of Architects selected Sophia Hayden's design. The design was for a three story building done in Italian Renaissance style with Corinthian columns.
