Lilleba Lund Kvandal
Annbjørg Helene "Lilleba" Lund Kvandal (21 April 1940 – 30 September 2016) was a Norwegian soprano singer and song teacher. She was born in Oslo to Casper Lund and Signe Jensen, and was married to composer Johan Kvandal from 1976. She studied at the Oslo Conservatory of Music and further in Hamburg, Munich and Zagreb. She made her concert debut in Augsburg in 1963. Between 1963 and 1970 she was assigned with various opera houses in Germany. In 1966, she won third prize in the ARD International Music Competition. She edited the folk song collection ''Norske folkeviser gjennom tusen år'' from 2000, based on the song collections of Catharinus Elling, Ludvig Mathias Lindeman and others. The collection includes children's songs (lullabies, singing games), youth songs, shieling songs and melodies (calls, nymph songs, and tunes for zither, flute and goat horn), medieval ballads, comic ballads, and hymns. Catharinus Elling
Catharinus Elling (13 September 1858 – 8 January 1942) was a Norwegian music teacher, organist, music critic, and composer. He was also a folk music collector and the author of a number of books. Biography Elling was born in Christiania (now Oslo), Norway. He was the son of Andreas Schaft Elling (1818–1872) and Pauline Bangsboe (1826–1905). His brother was engineer Ægidius Elling (1861–1949). He studied piano and composition in Leipzig from 1877 to 1878. In 1886 he received a scholarship and studied music at Professor Heinrich von Herzogenberg at Hochschule für Musik in Berlin from 1886 to 1887. From 1896 to 1908, he was teacher at Oslo Conservatory of Music. He was also organist at Gamlebyen Church in Kristiania from (1908–26). Shieling
A shieling is a hut or collection of huts on a seasonal pasture high in the hills, once common in wild or sparsely populated places in Scotland. Usually rectangular with a doorway on the south side and few or no windows, they were often constructed of dry stone or turf. More loosely, the term may denote a seasonal mountain pasture for the grazing of cattle in summer. Seasonal pasturage implies transhumance between the shieling and a valley settlement in winter. Many Scottish songs have been written about life in shielings, often concerning courtship and love. The ruins of shielings are abundant landscape features across Scotland, particularly the Highlands. Ludvig Mathias Lindeman
Ludvig Mathias Lindeman (28 November 1812 – 11 March 1887) was a Norwegian composer and organist. He is most noted for compiling Norwegian folk music in his work ''Ældre og nyere norske Fjeldmelodier''. Background Ludvig Mathias Lindeman was born in Trondheim, Sør-Trøndelag, Norway. He was the seventh of ten children born to Ole Andreas Lindeman (1769–1857) and Anna Severine Hickmann (1782–1844). In 1833 he was sent to Oslo to take his final exams and then studied theology at the university. In 1839, Lindeman succeed his elder brother, Jacob Andreas Lindeman (1805–1846), as cantor and organist of the Oslo Cathedral. Lindeman was in the position for 48 years until his death in 1887. Composer Fredrikke Waaler was one of his students. The ARD International Music Competition (german: link=no, Internationaler Musikwettbewerb der ARD) is the largest international classical music competition in Germany. It is organised by the Bayerischer Rundfunk and held once a year in Munich. Since its inception in 1952, it has become one of the most prestigious classical music competitions.
