Liga 1 (Indonesia)
Liga 1 ( en, League 1), also known as BRI Liga 1 for sponsorship reasons with Bank Rakyat Indonesia, is the men's top professional football division of the Indonesian football league system. Administered by the PT Liga Indonesia Baru (), Liga 1 is contested by 18 clubs and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with Liga 2. Top-flight professional league in Indonesia started from the 2008–09 season onwards, initially under the name of Indonesia Super League until 2015. Prior to the 2008 reforms, the national competitions used a tournament format. Liga 1, which started in 2017, is the latest rebranding of the league. Forty teams have competed in the top-tier league of Indonesian football since the start of the modern era in 2008 as the Indonesia Super League. 2008–09 Indonesia Super League
The 2008–09 Indonesia Super League was the first edition of the Indonesia Super League, which replaced the Liga Indonesia Premier Division, Premier Division as the top-tier Indonesian football league system, football competition in the country. The league was sponsored by Djarum and was officially called Djarum Super Liga Indonesia (SLI) or Djarum Indonesia Super League (ISL). Persipura Jayapura clinched the title after winning a match 3–1 against Persija Jakarta on 17 May 2009. Indonesian Football League System
The Indonesian football league system is a series of league system for association football clubs in Indonesia. Since 1994, Liga Indonesia is the league competition featuring association football clubs, as a result of two existing top-flight football leagues merger: Perserikatan (amateur) and Galatama (semi professional). Liga Indonesia is managed by PSSI, the Indonesian national football federation. There are three levels of competition in the hierarchy recently. The top two in the hierarchy are professional competitions, whereas the rest are amateur. Structure Liga 1 is the first-tier of football league in Indonesia. Persatuan Sepakbola Lamongan, or commonly known as Persela, is an Indonesian football club based in Lamongan, East Java. Currently the club plays in Liga 2, the second tier of football in the country. Perserikatan is a term that commonly refers to national amateur association football, football competitions in Indonesia held between 1931 and 1994 before the formation of Liga Indonesia, organized by the PSSI, the Indonesian football federation. The competition involved hundreds clubs in Indonesia and was divided into several levels. In English language, English, the term ''Perserikatan'' may literally translate to ''inter-association football championship'' as this competition involved all regional-level football associations in Indonesia.
