Lieber Correctional Institution
The Lieber Correctional Institution is a maximum-security state prison for men located in Ridgeville, Dorchester County, South Carolina, owned and operated by the South Carolina Department of Corrections. The facility was opened in 1986 and has a capacity of 1488 inmates held at maximum security. Lieber has also housed South Carolina's death row inmates since April 12, 1997, when they were moved from Broad River Correctional Institution. In September 2017, death row inmates were moved to Kirkland Correctional Institution. Ridgeville is a town in Dorchester County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,979 at the 2010 census, up from 1,690 at the 2000 census. Ridgeville is part of the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville metropolitan area. History The Cypress Methodist Camp Ground was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Geography Ridgeville is located near the center of Dorchester County at (33.0931, -80.3124). South Carolina Highway 27 passes through the town, leading north to U.S. Route 78 and to Exit 187 on Interstate 26. The South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) is the agency responsible for corrections in the U.S. state of South Carolina. Kirkland Correctional Institution is a state prison for men located in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, United States, owned and operated by the South Carolina Department of Corrections. Todd Christopher Kohlhepp ( Sampsell; born March 7, 1971) is an American sex offender and serial killer convicted of murdering seven people in South Carolina between 2003 and 2016. In addition, Kohlhepp kidnapped at least one woman, raped another, and claims to have killed many more. Early life Todd Kohlhepp was born on March 7, 1971, in Florida, and was raised in South Carolina and Georgia. His parents divorced when he was two years old. His mother gained custody and married another man the following year. Later psychological reports found that Kohlhepp had an unhealthy relationship with his stepfather and often wanted to live with his biological father, whom he had not seen in eight years.
