Liberal Initiative
The Liberal Initiative ( pt, Iniciativa Liberal, , IL) is a liberal political party in Portugal currently led by João Cotrim de Figueiredo. In 2019, its debut year at the Portuguese legislative elections, the party won one seat in the Portuguese Parliament. The party ran in its first elections in 2019, for the European Parliament, supporting its first government coalition, at regional level, after the 2020 Azorean regional election. It currently has 8 elected members of the parliament out of a total of 230 seats in the Portuguese Parliament. It defends opposition to statism through liberalism, calling for a low tax burden and laissez-faire, defending respect for individual freedom, opposing socialism. João Cotrim De Figueiredo
João Fernando Cotrim de Figueiredo (born 24 June 1961) is a Portuguese businessman and Liberal Initiative (Portugal), Liberal Initiative politician. He was the party's first member of the Assembly of the Republic (Portugal), Assembly of the Republic, for the Lisbon District, in 2019 Portuguese legislative election, October 2019. He was the leader of the party between October 2019 and January 2023, during which the party won eight seats in the 2022 Portuguese legislative election, 2022 election. Education and career Cotrim de Figueiredo grew up in Lisbon, where he sold clothes hangers door-to-door for a company established by his great-grandfather. He attended the German School Lisbon before studying Economics at the London School of Economics, and then obtained a Masters in Business Administration from the NOVA University Lisbon. 2019 European Parliament Election In Portugal
The 2019 European Parliament election in Portugal elected the Portuguese delegation to the European Parliament from 2019 to 2024. This was the eighth European Parliament election held in Portugal. The election was held on Sunday, 26 May 2019. The Socialist Party (PS) was the winner of the election, scoring 33.4% of the vote. The party increased their share of the votes by 2% from the 2014 election, and won an additional seat. It was one of the only three times in Portuguese history where the government party won a European election. The Social Democratic Party (PSD) achieved its worst results ever as a standalone party, with 21.9% of the vote, distancing more than eleven points from the winner. The People's Party (CDS), which ran alongside the PSD in the previous election, as part of the Portugal Alliance, also fell below expectations at 6.2% of the vote, only being able to elect their top candidate Nuno Melo. Socialism
Socialism is a left-wing economic philosophy and movement encompassing a range of economic systems characterized by the dominance of social ownership of the means of production as opposed to private ownership. Laissez-faire

Statism
In political science, statism is the doctrine that the political authority of the state is legitimate to some degree. This may include economic and social policy, especially in regard to taxation and the means of production.
