Lewis A. Rounds
Lewis A. Rounds (7 June 1843 – 1 May 1916) was a Brevet Major of the United States Army who was awarded the Medal of Honor for gallantry during the American Civil War. Rounds was awarded the medal on 1 December 1864 for actions performed at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House in May 1864. Personal life Rounds was born on 7 June 1843 in Cattaraugus County, New York. He married Maria Allbaugh in 1865. He died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 1 May 1916 and was buried in Wood National Cemetery in Milwaukee. Military service Rounds enlisted in the Army as a private at Norwalk, Ohio on 13 June 1861 and was assigned to Company D of the 8th Ohio Infantry. Brevet Major
In many of the world's military establishments, a brevet ( or ) was a warrant giving a commissioned officer a higher rank title as a reward for gallantry or meritorious conduct but may not confer the authority, precedence, or pay of real rank. An officer so promoted was referred to as being brevetted (for example, "he was brevetted major general"). The promotion would be noted in the officer's title (for example, "Bvt. Maj. Gen. Joshua L. Chamberlain" or "Bvt. Col. Arthur MacArthur"). It is not to be confused with a ''Brevet d'état-major'' in Francophone European military circles, where it is an award, nor should it be confused with temporary commissions. 8th Ohio Infantry Regiment
The 8th Ohio Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It served in the Eastern Theater in a number of campaigns and battles, but perhaps is most noted for its actions in helping repulse Pickett's Charge during the Battle of Gettysburg. Three-months regiment On April 12, 1861, Confederate forces that had recently seceded from the Union fired upon Federal controlled Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. In response to the attack, President Abraham Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to put down the rebellion. Hundreds of men from northeastern Ohio were quick to respond, volunteering for three months of military service. The 8th Ohio Infantry Regiment was organized in Cleveland between April 18 and May 4, 1861. In June, the regiment moved via train to Camp Dennison near Cincinnati for training and garrison duty.
