Levon Abrahamian
Levon H. Abrahamian ( hy, Լևոն Աբրահամյան; born January 2, 1947) is an Armenian anthropologist and historian. Biography and career Abrahamian was born in Yerevan, Soviet Armenia on January 2, 1947. He graduated from Yerevan State University (YSU) with M.S. in biophysics in 1970 and from the Institute of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in 1978 as Candidate of Sciences in Cultural and Social Anthropology. He joined the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography at the Academy of Sciences of Soviet Armenia in 1978, initially working as a junior researcher until 1988 and then as senior researcher. In 2005 he headed the Institute's Department of Contemporary Anthropological Studies. Abrahamian has taught at YSU since 1990. He has also taught as a visiting professor at the University of Pittsburgh (1994), Columbia University (2001), University of California, Los Angeles (2008), and University of California, Berkeley (1997 and 2015). Armenpress (Armenian Press; hy, Արմենպրես) is the oldest and the main state news agency in Armenia. History and profile Armenpress was founded on 18 December 1918 by the government of the First Republic of Armenia as the Armenian Telegraph Agency (Հայաստանի հեռագրական գործակալություն). Simon Vratsian played a major role in the establishment of the agency. After the Sovietization of Armenia in 1920 it was renamed to ''Armenkavrosta'', and subsequently known as ''Armenrosta'' and ''Armenta''. It was renamed Armenpress in 1972. During the Soviet period, from 1920 to 1991, it served as the "official sanctioned source of public information", operating under direct control of the Armenian Communist Party. Urban Anthropology
Urban anthropology is a subset of anthropology concerned with issues of urbanization, poverty, urban space, social relations, and neoliberalism. The field has become consolidated in the 1960s and 1970s. Ulf Hannerz quotes a 1960s remark that traditional anthropologists were "a notoriously agoraphobic lot, anti-urban by definition". Various social processes in the Western World as well as in the "Third World" (the latter being the habitual focus of attention of anthropologists) brought the attention of " specialists in 'other cultures'" closer to their homes.
